The Highway Patrolman...Getting Cooler All the Time

I've got two of the only "fancy" 28s produced, bright blue WSP Commemorative models......well, one is still fancied up anyway, as the other had suffered badly due to a flood in my dads basement. I have three others, two 1955s and a 1978. I'd love to have one of the few 8 3/8 guns as well. And of course, the grail gun, a 28-1 like azmick had found.......

I am utterly baffled by the guys saying "Except for the finish the 27 and 28 are the same." Well, um, excuse me but isn't the quality of the finish a big determining factor in value? Will a gun with 10% original finish sell for the same amount as one with 100%?

The 27 was much more refined, had a much better quality finish (even if you prefer the dull blue the high gloss finish is costlier and more deluxe), and came with a much wider range of options on sights and barrel lengths. Some of you seem to think all this equals nothing in determining value. Add this to the things I don't get around here.

SP all good points... and no arguments from me..........

Too me the differences are like comparing two brothers......

The elder brother a long barreled RM or 27 spent the 1930s through the 60s on several African Safari's...... when home a 3 1/2 inch kept him safe as "a suit" in NY or DC.

The younger.....the Highway Patrolman/28....4 or 6"........w/ a set of Stag grips & Pachmyar t-grip ..... spent the 50/60s drifting on the high plains of the American west......saddle leather and sleeping under the stars..........successor to the 19th century's Colt SSA

just saying

:D

Don't underestimate the power of this Forum in exposing folks to the HP - and therefore, driving up prices. I believe that this thread (http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-re...lman-thread-including-n-frame-ser-ranges.html) is the most viewed (386K) and replied to (almost 1,900) thread on the Forum and it is almost always on the "front page" of the 1961 to 1980 section of the Forum...:)

You are so right! And this "Highway Patrolman" has a certain appeal to her. Almost like that of a hauntingly beautiful woman that you come across & just can't take your eyes off of her. I have wanted one for over 30 years & will pick her up next week & take her in my arms. Isn't she a beauty;)

So far in this thread, (except for the group shot) I've only posted the 4" photos... so here is a 6" pre-28. It has just enough silver and the front sight has been modified by some previous owner into a "Baughman-Patridge" combo sight.

Also, this one reminds me more of a Ford Rapter, rather than a Harley or a Rolls...

BTW - the box does not number to the gun, but it is pretty close.

Thanks for letting me share,

Another picture of the Pre 28 Highway Patrolman. I took it to the range the other day to shoot it. The temperature was around 24° F so I didn't shoot the kind of groups I'm anticipating, we'll give it another go when it gets warmer.
