The Lone Ranger

Have no intentions of seeing it, just as I refuse to see the "new" version of Rooster Cogburn with Jeff Bridges.

Actually the new version of Rooster Cogburn was about as good as the original. However, Johnny Depp as The Lone Ranger has to be someone's idea of a joke.

Armie Hammer was great as Clyde Tolson in "J. Edgar."

As for Depp, most of his roles are unique. Probably one of his "straightest" roles in recent times was as Johnny Dillinger in "Public Enemies" but again excellent.

In handling firearms for the Dillinger role, Depp said he was very used to them having grown with them as a kid in the South.

I haven't seen "J. Edgar". Need to remedy that.

Depp was terrific in the strange "Edward Scissorhands", and in "Donnie Brasco".

I'm personally not too crazy about Depps makeup and that silly looking bird on his head but his portrayal of Tonto is supposedly more accurate of the Comanche of the time.
Hi snubbyfan
I think the bird thing kinda followed him from his western "DEAD MAN" It was more an odd headdress than the bird one worn now but similar. It starred Depp, Billy Bob, Bobby Mitchum, Steve Buscemi, shoot let's see, John Hurt.
It's not your daddy's cowboy movie.
It's only merit is the all time baddest of cowboy bad guys.
I found it interesting and noticed the bird thing going on now resembles the Indian in the earlier movie.
Dead Man was OK in an ODD kind of way.
Thanks
Mike

I just read an online review of this flick, and don't think I'll go to see it. The critic said it's basically two and a half hours of tongue-in-cheek references to western movie clichés that portrays the Ranger as a bit of a doofus. He went on to say that it flips back and forth between laughs (he described Depp's performance as "droll") and bids for pathos.

I think I'll give it a miss.

I may watch this one several years from now if it gets on Netflix instant view, but when the Rotten Tomatoes rating is 25% for all critics and 12% for the (so-called) top critics, I know from experience that I'd be wasting my time and money and probably be raising my blood pressure to see this in a theater.

Oh, and shouldazagged? I don't know Jack.

From all the trailers of the new movie version ive seen--ill stick with anything older--such as:

Actually I believe the bird on the head thing was Depps idea. He was researching for the makeup and saw a picture of an Indian with a bird in the background and it kinda looked like he had a bird on his head. He thought it looked cool and included it in his character.

I read the same Bird on Head story that snubbyfan read. Rather funny!

Well it is a Johnny Depp Disney film so I expect a certain amount of campiness.

I went with my dad to see it. We both felt Disney missed out on the spirit of what made it so great in the past and adding to the legacy. For those of you hoping to relive some of your childhood, you may want to pass on it.

Dad says it ruined The Lone Ranger for him. He's not the wise and confident Ranger of the past. This guy is totally opposite, and the movie really was about Tonto. I don't want to give spoilers but this one had everything you'd never expect to see in a Ranger movie (in a bad way), even prostitutes who befriend him and help him get the bad guy.

The Lone Ranger:

STARRING Johnny Depp as Keith Richards playing Tonto with a dead bird on his head.

Oh, and an actor with a name that sounds like a box of baking soda as some dude wearing a mask.

The reviews make it sound like "Pirates of the Purple Sage." I think I'll give it a miss. Some year in the future if it comes on TV when I'm too tired to change the channel, I may watch it.

I actually like Depp as an actor. "Dead Man" was a good small film that I need to see again one of these days; sounds like some of the pieces of that flick served as inspirations (or maybe just throwaway references) for bits of this one. There were some great insane moments, like Robert Mitchum (in his last or almost last role, I believe) talking to a stuffed bear.

Well, you guys have flat talked me out of seeing it.:)

On the other hand, "Dead Man" is headed for my Netflix queue.

(Dave, I echo shouldazagged's sentiment about "Pirates of the Purple Sage." You should get some kind of award for that one!)

The left wing, ultra-liberal, anti-gun, politically correct crowd are trying to say too much violence so don't take your kids to see it.

Sounds like a good movie to me. Those described above are generally so full of it, I suspect that it's the same this time.
