I am definitely warming up to them in a hurry after acquiring a long barrel 14-3. This thread is adding fuel to the fire. The recoil is significantly milder, and the accuracy is amazing. I'd love to find a long barrel 17 or 48 someday.

This one came to me a few months after I'd posted my others.

Added the smooth targets that I prefer on the long barreled revolvers.
Came in a somewhat battered presentation case the inserts for which Joe Cebull has restored beautifully.
Have the box all sanded ready for varnish.

I really like the long tube guns.

I just bought my first S&W - a 686-2 with 8 3/8"... it's awesome.

Followed that up a month later with a 629-2 with 7 1/2".

I shot this target double action, one-handed at 25 yards.

I am shooting this revolver about 1,000 to 1,500 rounds a week at the range, mostly double action at 25 yards, one-handed, and REALLY enjoying the range time.

I've been so busy lately playing mr. remodeler that my range time has been limited to zero recreational. My work requires some time monthly, but no time to shoot the long .41 mag.

What load are you using there?
With its rear sight cranked fully down, my 8-3/8" 27-2 shoots about 6" high at 25yd with every load I've tried in it.

I just bought a M57 8 3/8" that I have only visited due to a stupid Palm Beach county law that requires a waiting period... get to pick it up on the 1st. I paid $650 for a circa 1990 model without the original grips but with the box and tools. I have used the wait time to start loading ammo from mild to wild!

I fired that target using 158 grain Armscor FMJ .38 special loads. The gun is zeroed for a 6 oclock hold at 25 yards, using the standard NRA 25 yard pistol target. That means the gun shoots quite a bit higher than the point of aim, and gives me difficulties getting my elevation right.

I do not have any better luck shooting 148 grain wadcutters. I still have trouble getting my elevation right. I mean, elevation problems in addition to my unsteady hands and old eyes.

I have the smaller size rear sight blade and related screw on order from S&W, in hopes that I can remedy that problem. Maybe these old guns were supposed to be shot only at 100 yards, or 200 yards, where the bullet drop attributed to gravity would get the point of aim and the point of impact pretty close.
