THE NEW MUSIC THREAD

Every time you folks post one of these music threads, you make me think I am way too old (I'm not sure for what).

I went through the three pages here, and realized:
1. I recognized almost no performer except the old country stars, the Carpenters and, of course, Alison Krauss.

2. Never heard of Susan Tedeschi but I do recall Tom Petty died a couple of weeks ago.
Then realized I have never, to the best of my recollection, heard a single song he recorded.

3. Realized that if the songs or performer became widely known after I came back from the Service, I probably never listened to them.

4. I'm not sure why, just never had the interest. I listened to a couple of new songs on the Lounge this morning, really didn't like them.

5. I listen to old Country, Western Swing, old Rock, some Blue Grass (did I mention Alison?) and Southern Gospel.

I think this must put me out of the mainstream of this Forum. I guess I'll survive, but ....

Jeez Bob, you know my preferences better than my first wife!

Bob,

I find that sad in a way. Music has always been a large part of my life, although I have no musical talent. There are a vast array of songs that take me back in time, many I can instantly recall where I was and what I was doing when I heard them or was listening to them. Sometimes, it's sad, as they will evoke thoughts of my now deceased wife. Other times, they take me back to my childhood and happy times. Don't think for a minute though that music makes me live in the past, as I'm always on the search for new songs or tunes I like. My most recent additions came from this very thread: "Mary Did You Know" by Pentatonix. Thanks to modern technology, I can insert a memory card into my truck and listen to music from my house to my son's house, a 13 hour drive, and never hear the same song twice - unless I purposely replay it, which I've been known to do.

I believe we owe it to ourselves to expose ourselves to different music. If after hearing it, we don't like it, that's fine, as we all have our different tastes, but without hearing and experiencing it at least once, we don't know what we are missing. I would venture that I have one of the widest ranges of 'likes' here when it comes to different music. Even as I approach my 70's, I still like everything from classical to rap, but I will qualify that statement to say I do not like all classical, nor do I like all rap. In the most basic form, if I hear something and I like it, it doesn't matter to me what the format is. I do however like a lot of the music from the 60's, 70's and 80's, but as I said, I won't rule out anything until I've at least heard it. :D
