Post number 1 here on the forums was back in July of 2013. At the time, I viewed guns as tools (and I still do) but I didn't realize they could be collectibles or a passion as well. The first S&W I ever bought was a 3906 with a broken fixed rear sight for the tune of $240. I found the forum and decided to register and ask for more information on it which as usual, the forum community provided plenty of.

I found out that the 3906 was a sought after and somewhat scarce 3rd gen semi auto. Then I realized there were 100's of other variants through the generations that were in all different configurations and calibers. I was hooked.

Then a couple years into it I started visiting the other forum subsections and then got bit by the revolver bug. I met some new friends, learned a lot, and I eventually decided to be a contributor and SWCA member because I believe we need to support the collector community and the folks who make this forum so great.

So for post number 1001 I thought it would be appropriate to post my most recent acquisition, somewhat of a full circle if you will. Although I have a shooter 3906 I've always sought a NIB one to tuck away as a fond memory of where it all began. That search ended last week locally with this gem. I'm smitten and so thankful to be able to enjoy this hobby and collecting the last 9 years. Thank you Lee and Chad and the rest of the forum leaders, thank you Roy and all of the SWCA and SWHF team for all you do.

If you feel like sharing what started it all for you, I'd love to hear about it!

Cheers

My first were a couple of S&W revolvers I inherited from my brother . I really started my addiction when Sevens sold me a 639 . After that , it's been quite the ride . Then I read about 945's and decided I needed one of those . I posted a wanted ad here and I had at least 6 to pick from , this was before GB went nuts . Since then it's been an adventure to say the least .

I actually came to the forum looking for information on the S&W Shield, poked around and found the discussion threads on the 3rd generation S&Ws. I was quite impressed with the recommendations for those older S&Ws and decided to buy one, a police trade in 5906 from Buds. Now I have many 3rd gens, and intend to continue to acquire more. My favorites are the 6906, 4013TSW, and my most recent purchase a WV PSC 4566TSW. Those 3rd gens just keep multiplying...

Mine was a 1006 which I traded straight up for a Ruger p85 back in the early 90's go figure! Which I still own.

Funny place to start from

Well it didn't quit start me off here on the forum (being a revolver guy) but very shortly after I started I found an interesting pistol I had never seen before at a LGS & the tag did not correctly identify it's model number.

Thru the forum I quickly found out it was a M845 Limited, which I just as quickly bought, and that started me down the endless 3rd Gen rabbit hole. :p

My 3rd Generation interest started after poking around behind the LGS counter and finding a 3913NL in excellent condition with the box and papers.

9 3rd Generation pistols and a 469 for good measure later.....

The original 3913NL was replaced with a 3914NL, and was joined by a 3914DAO.

5096 and a NYPD 5946. CHP 4006TSW, 4013TSW, 4043, 4016-1 and a 4566TSW WVPSC.

I had some CS pistols, but I sold them. I preferred the 39xx series as a CCW choice. Or a J-frame wheelgun.

JMHO YMMV

Addendum - my family were always big S&W wheelgun fans. I was the 1st one to get involved in the service pistols. We had 41's and 52's when we shot Bullseye.

But if anyone had a service pistol it was a Glock or Beretta,

I always thought S&W built revolvers, but I inherited a 39-2 I rethought my attitude. Not wanting a lot of wear on my near perfect 39-2 I bought a 639 and it was all downhill from there.

I was issued a 4" model 19 in 1974. Had never fired a double action revolver before. Heck, I'd never even seen a model 19 before.

Needless to say, I loved the gun. Saved up for a couple of years and bought the one in the photo below. Although it's wearing a different barrel now, I still enjoy shooting it.

To me, nothing even comes close in terms of utility, serviceability and shootability, of the old S&W revolvers.

This is the one that started it all.....

They day I turned 21, I went and got myself a S&W 629 like I always told myself I would. That was back in 1990 something. To this day, i throw a 340pd in my pocket every time I leave the house.

My first S&W was a six-inch Model 17-6, gift from Mom on the first Christmas after my Dad passed away. I was absolutely in awe with that gift, as were all of my much older siblings who had long been out the house. I had recently turned 16.

First handgun I ever bought with my own cash was a six-inch 686-3 in the summer of '89.

First semiauto S&W I ever got was a Model 1006… 1996 if I recall, a gun that my buddy bought new after picking my brain about what his first handgun should be. His then new wife thought it was high time he got that scary thing out of the house. He eventually got the hell out from under her, but I've still got the 1006 of course. (and the 17-6 and 686-3.)

My first S&W was a Model 39-2. Not the most accurate pistol in the world, but it was boringly reliable. I sold it shortly after buying a Tanfoglio TZ-75 Series 88, which was the newest double stack 9x19 in the U.S. market at the time.

Years later, I found myself longing for another Model 39 and I ended up buying a Model 439. This one is reasonably accurate and boringly reliable. Since then, I have added a 6946 as my EDC, plus a 6906 and a pair of 645's.

S&W's single stack pistols fit well in my hands, really wish they had made more 3904's and 3906's and it would have been great if they had expanded the line to include a 3903.

My first S&W and my first double action i ever shot was my 17-3 , I saw it behind the glass ,in the trade-in rack at the lgs .I asked the nice guy at the counter ,who had sold me a pair of ruger vaqueros at the recent gun show , if it was one of those "k frames" he smiled knowingly and handed it to me to examine
It was like he knew I was going to buy it lol
I found this forum and learned that the obvious companion to my 17 would be a mod 14 which I promptly found and was surprised at how accurately I could shoot with proper sites lol
Up until this time I had shot cowboy style revolvers since I was a kid , just a groove in the top strap
Now I have more S&W than any other brand , but I still love cowboy guns

Unfortunately I can't post photos of the one that started it for me, because in the early days, I had to sell one gun to buy another. My first S&W was a 469 when they first appeared, and I loved it, but interests changed and I had a series of revolvers and autos before I stopped selling and started accumulating.

Dads model 10 started it for me. When Bethlehem Steel went under and dad got laid off in early 70s he became an armed security guard for Trico products (windshield wiper manufacture). They had 3 large plants in Buffalo NY. He taught me how to safely handle a revolver and let me shoot it when we'd go squirrel hunting. I still have that revolver and some day my son will have it.

About 12 years ago, I found this one in a local pawn shop. I walked away from it, but about a week later I went back in the shop and it was still there. It looked so sad. :( Anyway, it came home with me. I'm a former cop and it had every appearance of being a former law enforcement weapon, so I figured we were a perfect match. I owned other S&W revolvers at the time, but this is the one that started my slide down the slippery slope. Ain't it great! :D
A short time late, I joined the forum, and it's been a wonderful learning experience. Oh, and the M&P still resides in my safe.
