The Russians have gone in

I've read this thought at
least a year ago, that Putin
knows if his power slips
even a little bit he will be
a dead man.

He can only go forward even
if the results are backwards,
never admit mistakes, never
retreat, never relax for one
moment inside the Kremlin
as well as outside of it.

I saw an interview with Fiona Hill, a specialist on Russia and former National Security Council officer, regarding her views on Putin.

She spoke of being at a dinner sitting next to Putin. She said he did not eat or drink anything at dinner, the implication being he is concerned about being poisoned even at a dinner he is hosting.

She believes the greatest threat to Putin is his inner circle.

...Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia all consider the Russians, who occupied their countries until the Soviet Union collapsed, the same as the Nazis, who also occupied their countries.

As I've mentioned on here, Harijs (the father of a close friend) was a Latvian who was drafted into the Wehrmacht when the Germans booted the Red Army out of the Baltic states. To the day he died, he swore that not even 3,000 miles of ocean was enough space between him and the Russians...

For some insight into why the Latvians, Lithuanians, and Estonians have such a burning hatred of the Russians, read this...

In 1970, I got a chance to visit Latvia with a group of college students from The Netherlands. Almost every time we were out of earshot from our Russian tour leader, various Latvian people would sidle up to us and say in English, "We are not Russians, you know." The meaning was obvious from the way they said it.

Just look at this map.

The pale yellow are NATO members before 1991.

The mustard-colored are new NATO members after 1991. Every one of them was either an outright Soviet republic (the Baltics) or a member of the Warsaw Pact before. Not only are they no longer under Russia's thumb, they've actually joined "the other side".

Now look at the locations of the new "frontline states", Georgia, Ukraine, and Belarus. It becomes quite clear why Putin invaded Georgia in 2008, is now invading Ukraine, and will certainly intervene in Belarus if his lapdog Lukashenko is ever toppled.

Putin isn't just evil or crazy. He sees this map. And the problem won't go away with him personally. Until Russia stops seeing itself as an imperial power, and becomes a largely self-absorbed pluralistic democracy like the Western European countries, it will be a threat to its neighbors.

We've never been really, really invaded as have European countries - of course they want to be in NATO, because then they don't want to suffer the recent fates of South Ossetia, the Crimean Peninsula, or now Ukraine. You don't get to be the bully, then complain that your victims are threatening you by mere presence. There is zero justification for Russian aggression toward NATO, Ukraine, or Georgia and there never has been. .

In the news:

Belarussian Pres spllled the beans that Moldova might be next. Transnistria, too.

Russia is negotiating, on behalf of the US .gov, a nuke deal with the Iranians and part of the deal involves buying oil from Iran along with Russian oil.

These are verifiable facts involving the situation in Ukraine.

That second part really frosts me to no end.

The obvious way out of the carnage is for Zelensky to accept the inevitable and negotiate the best deal he can get. Hopefully he can survive this mess to live out his life elsewhere. Pouring more money and equipment into Ukraine only prolongs the loss of innocent lives and the destruction of property. Putin is going to win, like it or not.

I don't like it, but, this is really the only option. With everything going on behind the scenes, Ukraine, is being hung out to dry.

Now that Visa and Mastercard have shut down operations with Russia, I wonder if I'll still get the Russian bride I ordered.

You can get a much better deal on a Ukrainian bride right now. Better quality and warranty. I think they are on sale including free shipping right now. A little "foxhole humor".

This guy was formerly Russia's richest man. Putin imprisoned him for ten years on tax evasion charges, which he says were trumped up.

When he got out in 2013, he moved to London. He's of the opinion that Russia cannot prevail in the Ukraine, and this war marks the beginning of the end for Putin, and of Russia as we have known it. He thinks it, Putin and Russia's collapse, will take one to two years.

I heard a retired American General echo one of the previous posts. Numerical superiority will take over the longer this goes.

His take.
Will the Russian occupiers have their hands full? Absolutely, as Ukraine has a large land mass and they will meet resistance in the rural areas.

He also suggested NATO setting up a safe zone for refugees in western Ukraine. But didn't know what would happen if Russian troops advance west.

Notably, Russia took out an airfield in western Ukraine. Were they watching the interview?

I am far for being a scholar but I only
see a couple ways out of this mess.

Russia withdraws........unlikely.
Putin is overthrown......maybe/hopefully

Last......WWIII is just days away.

You may have missed another very likely option. The Ukrainians continue their resistance regardless the cost. The invasion of Ukrainian becomes the end of Russia as we know it, much the same as the Nazi Germany's invasion of Russia was the beginning of the end for them. Putin's military is a much more inferior military force than Hitler's. Think Stalingrad on a national scale.
