The Russians have gone in

Why in the world would we advise
what type weapons we are sending to Ukraine ?
That's easy - Russian 20-somethings are like 20-somethings everywhere, glued to social media. They can use Ukrainian signal, so they get our news stuff Russian people don't. Don't you suppose there's value in them knowing the **** that's killing them is coming in greater numbers and lethality? While they are forced to forage for food and use Soviet-era munitions? PsyOps come in many forms.

It's highly likely that the Ukrainians (and I don't mean just some high officials) knowing that large amounts of effective stuff are on the way has a bigger positive effect on their fighting effort, than any advantage the Russians get from the same information might hurt.

Reportedly a Kremlin
deputy commander of
all Russian forces has
been arrested for
"leaking" information.
What those leaks entail
were not specified.

Beyond that, any countermeasures the Russians take help the Ukrainians. Massed groups, massed armor, massed rockets/arty is the Ruskie standard playbook, so if they disperse in terrain they don't own, they're even more vulnerable. They might find more food, though.

Yes, this is getting downright strange. Puti thought it would be a cakewalk? Now he's getting the bloody nose, a bit of rope a dope from the Ukrainians, and massive world outrage. Meanwhile mass amounts of new weapons are inbound, along with volunteers. He is arresting 1000s of his own people who hate him. This is really going pear shaped. Tune in tomorrow, same Bat Time, same Bat Station.

Interesting discussions tonight on the cable news...

About Russian casualties...the consensus was that even if the Russians are under-reporting their casualties, and the Ukrainians are over-reporting Russian casualties, Putin has still lost a load of men, several thousand at least.

Apparently, the latest Russian general to die was communicating over an unencrypted phone or radio, which allowed the Ukrainians to geo-locate him and kill him and his staff. If true, this is yet more evidence of the amateurish way the Russians are conducting this war.

The point was made that this is the biggest loss of tanks in battle since World War II.

And then we have this remarkable video by Arnold Schwarzenegger...more than 9 minutes long but definitely worth watching...

I see the Brits are moving a battery of their latest SAM system, Sky Sabre, into Poland. It doesn't have the range of Patriot or Aster, but it is very modern and designed to deal with everything except ballistic missiles. Google it, there are some interesting launch videos out there.

4th Russian general, Oleg Mityarv, killed in Ukraine.

Hummmm, seems many do not remember what Stalin did early in WWII. Have no idea about these generals, how hard core they were.
Also perhaps we should remind Russia regarding their supplying the NVA and VC many years ago. What goes around, comes around.

Here's a good WaPo article profiling four Ukrainian women fighting in the war.

One, a 55 year-old medical assistant, has this to say:

"I realize that I'm ready to tear the enemies' throats with my teeth," she said. "Each and every one of us will do that to them. And the land will burn under their feet."

A real sweetheart :eek::D

Here's a good WaPo article profiling four Ukrainian women fighting in the war....

"...Vasylchenko, 29, first learned to shoot as a child. Around ninth grade, she said, boys began studying how to use weapons at school and girls were shuttled into courses on medical aid. She rushed to learn all the medical skills quickly, then joined the boys' class, where she learned "to assemble and disassemble a machine gun." Later, she said, she became well-versed in other weapons, including the Dragunov sniper rifle and the Kalashnikov..."

The degree of absolute, level-headed, stone-cold determination these people are showng is truly impressive. Putin may (or may not) win the war but clearly he will have to kill every able-bodied person and level every building to do so, and no doubt at terrible cost to his own forces.

I don't know if it is true or apocryphal, but it is said that the Japanese never planned to invade the US because "there would be a rifle behind every tree in America." It appears this will be the case in the Ukraine as well.

Bravo/brava!

After Putin's slightly unhinged rant yesterday about scum and traitors (talking about Russians opposed to the war), questions are coming to the fore again about just how solid his practical grip on power is.

Is he losing it, or can he use a crackdown on the opposition to actually strengthen his position? We know so little about his "inner circle" (if there is one) that his actual ability to project personal power is hard to assess.

(Speaking of inner circle, if you need some related comic relief, I highly recommend the black comedy "The Death of Stalin" with Steve Buscemi and Michael Palin)

The last time a Russian leader was overthrown as the result of being bogged down in a losing war in 1917, the result was a multi-year bloodbath of enormous proportions. And there were no nukes. There is a good chance that Putin learned from his protégé Assad in Syria that the only way for a dictator to survive is to never give in and just keep killing your own people.

Locked in his bunker, surrounded by yes men, cut off from reality, and wondering what happened. Not a good plan. Sounds a bit like an Austrian corporal some years back.

Maybe, but i just read this in The Guardian:

Syrians join Russian ranks in Ukraine as Putin calls in Assad's debt

Analysis: Safe in his palace, Syrian leader appears to have given Moscow carte blanche to airlift his army

"...The first Syrian troops to join Putin's ranks – an advance force of 150 – arrived in Russia on Thursday, European intelligence officials claim. Ukrainian military intelligence, echoing a claim by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, believes 40,000 Syrians have signed up to fight – a figure that would represent a sizeable chunk of the battle-ready capacity of the country's entire military....

In the economic wasteland of post-war Syria, the best – and maybe only – state-backed job on offer is one that those who sign on for might not come home from..."

Except Herr Hilter had actual combat experience. Putin is used to torturing and poisoning people without getting his hands scratched.
