The Russians have gone in

What's that oft cited belief
about history repeating
itself if ignored?

Well, stop churning up the past
with who wronged whom
to justify another round of
hostilities.

Putin has tried to frame his
butchery by recalling how
wronged Russia should feel
and why it needs to be an
empire again.

Nuts to him.

And now Russia is using land mines.

"Russian forces are using banned anti-personnel mines to cover its tactical retreat in Ukraine, according to a report from Human Rights Watch.

Russia's use of these mines shows they know they've been defeated in the region and don't plan another assault on Kyiv, according to an expert from the Institute for the Study of War."Russia's Planting of Land Mines Shows They Don't Plan Another Big Attempt on Kyiv

I saw on the news a fuel depot in Russia was attacked by supposedly Ukrainian helos.
Russia had the nerve to complain that this attack may hurt the current "peace" talks. This while they continue to attack Kyiv.
Talk about some big brass ones!

Amanpour and Company | Elliot Ackerman: Ukraine Has a Three-to-One Advantage | Season 2022 | PBS

This video interview of Ellioit Ackerman is very convincing when it comes to explaining the Ukrainian successes so far. It's quite long but give it a listen if you have the time.
Just watched it. Very good analysis by someone who's BTDT.

As has been discussed here before, it boils down to leadership failure and inflexibility on the Russians' side (going back to Moltke's statement from 1871):
"No plan of operations extends with any certainty beyond the first encounter with the main enemy forces. Only the layman believes that in the course of a campaign he sees the consistent implementation of an original thought that has been considered in advance in every detail and retained to the end..."
and on the Ukrainians' side, unshakable tenacity of moral purpose that is drawing film makers, IT professionals, teachers and every kind of non-combatant to arm themselves and train to defend their homeland.

The Ukrainins also have the advantage of a charismatically popular leader who, rather than passing down pronouncementts from some palatial room with a ridiculous 40' table, is (dangerously) on the front lines in a T-shirt, with no façade.

It also seems Zelenskyy has managed to replace what was a stagnant, corrupt administration with one that will hopefully be more enlightened. OTOH, the chances, as Ackerman mentioned, of this happening in Russia, are not good. The country is vast and varied, highly propagandized and Putin is generally popular. How much of the truth of what is happening in Ukraine will filter down to the general populace is hard to tell.

Our aboriginal peoples in N. America are known for the descriptive names they give people and places. If the war in Ukraine has a satisfactory conclusion, the Ukrainians will be colloquially known as "The People Over There With Big Brass Ones."

Shared Russian pain brings it's own truth, as evidenced in this BBC article.

BBC News - The heavy losses of an elite Russian regiment in Ukraine
The heavy losses of an elite Russian regiment in Ukraine - BBC News

"...At his funeral, deputy defence minister Gen Yuri Sadovenko said the colonel "lived for the future, for the future of our people, a future without Nazism"

They seem to be obsessed with Nazis! Yes, the Russians "did a Ukraine" against Hitler but that was nearly 80 years ago. And Zelenskyy is Jewish... It seems Hitler's "Thousand Year Reich" does indeed live on, at least psychologically.

Reading that, I couldn't help thinking, "What a waste of lives". I can't help feeling sorry for most of these people, who are being used as pawns for a futile and artificial purpose.

As I've written here before, my gf is of Russian descent (her Russian mom is 93 and still sharp as a tack). She has an ex-pat Russian collegue at the universoty where she teaches and he told her, "Russia is a dying country."

Dealing with Putin is a real problem. Even if he were to be overthrown (unlikely), an article I posted a while back said the people keeping him in power are the "siloviki" (sp?)- people from the secret security forces, who will likely ensure that their interests continue to be served.

We are indeed "living in interesting times." Too interesting.

Russia-Ukraine war latest: Ukrainian troops retake entire Kyiv region as evidence emerges of execution of civilians

Ukrainian troops retake control of the entire territory of Kyiv region

Ukrainian forces have retaken control of the entire territory of the Kyiv region, Ukraine's deputy defence minister Hanna Malyar posted on Facebook tonight.

"Irpin, Bucha, Gostomel and the whole Kyiv region - is liberated from the invader," she wrote.

------

In addition to a mass grave with nearly 300 people, bodies left in the street and civilians killed seemingly execution-style, the Ukrainian defense ministry has found evidence that Russian troops attempted to incinerate the bodies of some dead civilians as well.

Evidence found of execution of civilians

Journalists have captured disturbing images out of Bucha, one of the cities in the Kyiv region retaken by Ukrainian forces. Here, the image confirm reports that some civilians who were found dead in the streets of Bucha were killed execution-style, with their hands tied and bags over their heads.

...Anatoly Fedoruk, mayor of Bucha, told AFP that the city has already buried 280 people in a mass grave. Corpses littered the streets, he said, some as young as 14 years old. "All these people were shot, killed, in the back of the head," Fedoruk said.

Many of the bodies had white bandages on them "to show that they were unarmed," he said....
