The Russians have gone in

Today is the three-month anniversary beginning this current phase of Russia's war against Ukraine.
Ukraine's President posted this to Facebook:
"Someone gave us only three days, and we endured three brave, victorious, heroic months and continue to fight for our freedom and independence. I am grateful to everyone who does everything for the victory. For peace in Ukraine," President Volodymyr Zelensky

Meanwhile this:

Henry Kissinger in Davos for
the World Economic Forum
suggests Ukraine should
consider ceding some of its
territory in the interest of
European stability.

Today, an analyst said that
at the onset Zelensky
considered attempts at
meeting Putin, perhaps
appeasing him in some way.
But with the slaughter of
civilians that idea is dead.

Really have enjoyed this thread.
Having to quit school in the 4th grade to work the
fields and livestock I'm not well educated or well read.

Two thoughts......

1. Outside of Russia's air defense what keeps the
Ukrainian's from putting Moscow in the dark by striking
a power scource. ?

2. Been some recent news about what the USA would do
if China invades Tiawan ?
Given the worlds reaction to the Russian invasion your opinion
regarding China/Tiawan invasion. ?

Lots more trouble in the Donbas.

The easternmost part of the Ukrainian-held Donbas pocket, the city of Sievierodonetsk on the east bank of the Siverskiy Donets river and its twin Lysychansk on the west bank, have become the pivotal battlefield there, with Russian forces advancing from three directions to encircle them.

This offensive by the Russians and
the battle now raging was predicted
immediately after Kyiv survived the
initial invasion. The offensive was
delayed whil the Russians were
tied up attacking Mariupol on the Black
Sea.

The delay in Mariupol hopefully gave
Ukrainian forces enough time to
really prepare for
this battle by getting enough
Western artillery and other
armaments.

I'd hate to call this THE decisive
battle but a lot rides on just
how terrible the losses might
be on both the Ukrainian and
Russian sides.

Once again morale might be
the key element, not just arms.

That was posted in one of our papers today, originating in an article in The Telegraph (UK).

Ukraine must be made to cede territory to Russia, Henry Kissinger warns in Davos
It would be fatal for the West to forget the proper place of Russia in the European balance of power, says the former U.S. secretary of state

"...Such a move would be greeted with fury by Ukrainians...." No kidding.

I was amazed Kissinger is still alive. I looked it up…he'll be 99 years old on Friday.

I think Old Henry' thinking is stuck a bit in the 19th/20th century and the historical balance of power between European powers that underpinned such things as the System of Vienna, the European order after 1815 and the defeat of Napoleon which was a particular focus of Kissinger's academic work before he went into politics.

A main feature of that order was reintegrating the old enemy, France, and making that country a partner in maintaining stability.

Little problem compared to Ukraine: Napoleon was defeated and gone. Putin isn't.

Screw Russian pride. Their military conducts itself like a pack of coyotes. At some point, the Russian people need to fix this.

I had no idea Ol' Hank was still around.

I can't really say what I would like to.
Rules an' all.....
I will say I could not care any less what he has to say. I would imagine the Ukrainians feel about the same.
The N.V. played him like fiddle in Paris for years while he basked in the limelight as some kind of hero peacemaker. That worked out real well, didn't it?
He has lived too long IMO, but I should leave that call to God.

I continue to be in awe of the news coverage coming from Ukraine.

"reddit" has a sub forum titled Ukraine/Russia

this forum consist of post, cell phone videos, drone videos , ect of what exactly is going on.

The active posters consist of actual service members , private citizens both Ukrainian and Russian, as well as family members who are relaying messages from those who are serving.

Its not for the faint of heart.

However I do feel that it is important to understand exactly what is , and is not happening.

Having Russians contribute really surprises me.

Xfuzz, I have been reading your posts for years and think your lack of formal education has certainly not inhibited your ability to write clearly and make interesting and perceptive comments.

Here's what I think.

I think Ukraine does not want to overtly attack inside Russia's borders. (There were some oil refineries in Russia near the border that went up in smoke unexpectedly. Suspicion is that the Ukrainians got to them covertly, but nothing has been proven publicly.)

I think Ukraine, undergoing a full scale attack by the Russian war machine, is probably willing to carry out attacks within Russia overtly — after all, what else could the Russians do to them? — but is restrained by NATO, which wants to avoid WWIII/nukes. The constraint is enforced, I'd wager, by NATO making it clear that an attack by Ukraine into Russia would lead to a cut off in the provision of NATO weapons to Ukraine.

My opinion re a Chinese invasion of Taiwan is that we should militarily defend them. China has become increasingly aggressive in recent years, and I think the US admin's statement yesterday that yes, we will militarily defend Taiwan from Chinese invasion was timely. Overdue even. "Strategic ambiguity" was not working well anymore.

Apparently a Russian air force general was shot down. Strange article. 63 years old and retired yet flying missions in a SU-25 in Ukraine. Alleged confirmation from Russian pilots on Telegram channel.

Like everywhere else, good help is hard to find.

Ukraine refugees, now in B.C., bear witness to ordeal of war

Story here. Arrived here from Mariupol.

Sergey Toporkov and his wife Olena arrived in Canada with little but the clothes on their backs...

Good article, OBH. I liked this part:

...On the morning of March 18, Russian troops arrived on the doorstep and informed them that they would be relocated to Russia. They were fingerprinted and photographed then bused across the border to the town of Taganrog, and then to Rostov on Don.

But once there, Sergey and Olena found themselves being helped by Russians who generously gave them clothing, food and water.

"These were civilian volunteers who were not afraid of Putin, not afraid to speak of the war," he said. "They told me they thought the war was stupid. I think that many of the Russians are good people, even a lot of those in the military. They can't escape from the situation they're in."...

Three months in, was supposed to take 3 days. What could puti possibly be thinking? China must be watching with baited breath too. Although re-supply for Taiwan will be impossible if they blockade the island.

Yes, but we are in uncharted waters now, details we are not allowed to discuss here.

Ukraine has received MI-24 attack helicopters and RM-70 MLRS rocket systems from the Czech Republic.
Also, they have started using the Cesar self-propelled Howitzers just received from France.
