The Russians have gone in

Ukrainian officials said that Russian troops have evacuated Snake Island, a remote island off the south of Ukraine that was occupied by Russian forces on the first day of the invasion.

Russia's Ministry of Defense also confirmed the withdrawal has taken place from the island, which is locally known as Zmiinyi Island, describing it as an act "of goodwill."

Andriy Yermak, President Zelenskyy's chief of staff, tweeted this morning that there were no Russian troops on Snake Island anymore while an official message from Ukraine's southern operational command said Russian forces had "hastily evacuated" the island which is a strategic outpost in the Black Sea

"During the night, as a result of the successful next stage of the military operation with strikes by our missile and artillery units on Snake Island, the enemy hastily evacuated the remnants of the garrison with two speed boats and, presumably, left the island," the operational command said on Facebook.

It added that currently, Snake island "is covered in fire, explosions are heard" with the final outcome of the operation still being investigated.

In a briefing by Russia's Ministry of Defense on Thursday, it confirmed the withdrawal, stating:

"On June 30, as a step of goodwill, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation completed the fulfillment of their tasks on Zmeiny Island and withdrew the garrison stationed there."

It said the move "demonstrated to the world community that the Russian Federation does not hinder the efforts of the UN to organize a humanitarian corridor for the export of agricultural products from the territory of Ukraine."

Russia said the decision "will not allow Kyiv to speculate on the impending food crisis, referring to the impossibility of exporting grain due to Russia's total control of the northwestern part of the Black Sea

".....as a step of goodwill......"

Russians withdraw from Snake Island.

Translation: "Position no longer
tenable."

On the other hand, for the Ukrainians
to suggest the Russians were driven
off is just being plain rude.

Originally Turkey was gonna get F-35s. (They're now getting F-16s.) Then they bought Russian S-400 anti aircraft missiles, which I understand to be like our Patriots.

We then kicked them out of the F-35 program because if the Turks flew the F-35 with the S-400 in operation, its stealth qualities would be compromised/accessed by the Russians. The S-400s have been delivered, but are inactive.

We need to get Ukraine some surface to surface missiles that reach Sevastapol from Snake Island.

Nah! That would be embarrassing
for the Russian navy.

Bad enough a Ukraine soldier said,
"XXXx Russian ship" or something
to that effect.

I may have a chance to help a bit there. Most civilian aid is working through there.
Been forty years, but they were very hospitable (and proud of native son Pope John Paul).

Good luck, and I hope you get a chance to do some good there.

I do love a sharp thumbnail in Vlad's eye.

Did hear of Ukrainian missile strikes on the Russia side of the border...timed after significant Russian strikes on Ukrainian civilians.
I've read about a high percentage of Russian missiles experiencing operational failures. The most recent one, which I think is the one your mentioning, is purported to be a Russian missile failure, because the debris is from a type which only they operate.

Did you see the recent Russian "boomerang" failure captured on video?

As City Falls, Ukraine's Last Hope in Luhansk Falls With It

(Gift) NYT article here

Lysychansk managed to hold out for a week after its twin city, Sievierodonetsk, was captured. But on Sunday a pro-Russian flag flew there, as well.

The last major city held by Ukraine in the heavily contested eastern province of Luhansk has fallen, military officials on both sides said Sunday, giving Moscow a milestone victory in its campaign to capture the Donbas, the mineral-rich region bordering Russia that has long been in President Vladimir V. Putin's sights..,

...For nations in the West, however, the next phase of the war will prove a test not just of military logistics but of solidarity. As the conflict drags on, their own citizens are feeling the economic pain, and unity among the allies may be difficult to sustain.

Russia now faces new challenges of its own. It controls more than a fifth of Ukraine — much of it cities in name only, skeletal remains emptied of people after months of shelling — but it will need to replenish depleted forces and ammunition as it wages what promises to be a fierce, drawn-out ground war...

UKRAINE BACK IN

Ukrainian troops have raised the country's flag once again on Snake Island, a strategically important outpost in the Black Sea that was re-captured by Ukrainian forces last week.

Serhiy Bratchuk, spokesman for the Head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, posted images of the Ukrainian flag being raised on Snake Island, also known as Zmiinyi Island, on Telegram on Thursday.

Separately, Ukraine's Special Operations Forces said they had completed the task of clearing the island, with the destruction of 30 units of enemy equipment in the process.

"Abandoned ammunition and vast ruins were discovered" the Operational Command "South" posted on Facebook with images of the flag posted on Youtube.

Boris Johnson's party leadership resignation today and his imminent departure from being Prime Minister may signal a future reduced level of British support for Ukraine.

Or, Ukraine might get even more support. Polls show the leading Tory for the job, who is Minister of Defense, and is also the most popular member of Johnson's cabinet, Ben Wallace is already stating his continued support for the war effort.

This guy says time to revise the West's strategy: Russia currently making more money off its energy than before the war, while continuing energy shortages likely to cause recession in Germany. His solution is to free up more oil by, among other things, compromising with Iran, developing a Dutch gas field, and making oil leases more attractive for long term investment in the US.

All while beefing up military support to Ukraine.

The economic war against Russia isn't working. The U.S. and Europe must adapt.
