The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

weatherby, I'd like to see that, thanks. I, like many here, like to be as correct and as clear as possible when it comes to nomenclature or describing things.

Thank to all for this civil discussion

I have a lot to learn about this gun. I also received a 2" S&W revolver in 38 SPL that says 10-2 "Airweight" on it. I'll research that gun on here another time

Interesting. Perhaps brushed/brush blue is another enthusiast term, then, sort of like "Cokes".

I only have two, a 28 no dash 6" 4-screw SS1944XX...1958 ish and a NIB 28-2 4" S2714XX... 1966 ish.

If anybody can nail the dates better I would appreciate it. Thanks

My most recent. 28-2 serial # N2553XX

Confirm info on SWHP...

Hello everyone...

I am new here. I have been browsing for a spell but never posted anything.

I just picked up a HP the other day. Was on a website one night while browsing so it was a bit of an impulse buy. I hadn't bought anything with my 03 lately so I grabbed it. The only one the company had.

I think I got the info right but I am looking for a confirmation. The photographs below are of the revolver. If my quick learning is correct it believe it to be a:
1954-55 manufactured HP; (the first year I think?)
4" Blue, 5 screw, Pinned barrel and recessed cylinder. The serial number is S122XXX. Adjustable rear sights are also on it. It clearly has wear which I think gives it a good deal of character. There is a 5 digit number on the yoke and crane. The serial number is on the butt, inside the ejection rod shroud, on the crane as it's viewed by looking into the cylinder. I think they are the original walnut grips with the S&W logo. This revolver does not have the model number in the normal place on the yoke so I guess it's one of the no model number units. I am going to ask for the letter from the S&W historian hopefully next month. Any additional info would be appreciated. Also a guess to price? I would overall rate it as good with the cylinder and bore as VG.
Thanks for your time!

You are correct...it's a pre-28 5-screw...nice catch. The original stocks should have a diamond around the escutcheon and be stamped with the serial number on the back. The rear sight has been filed down(for good reason). The price/value will depend on an educated buyer who wants a pre-28 4'bbl.

Thanks for the response. The grips don't have the diamond or the serial number on them. No biggies I guess.

I have a Highway Patrolman 28-2 and need to turn to the experts for a few questions that I have. From the start of this thread, it looks that the gun was made in 1978-1980. I inherited it from my grandfather that owned a gun shop in Louisiana. Also, if you guys have a current value, not that it matters b/c I will be keeping it....but I would love to know.

I am trying to find out if it is brushed nickel or refinished. It looks a bit too shiny (like chrome), but the bottom and top of the gun look more dull like the original finish for the gun. There is no "N" stamped on the inside of the grips. It looks all original, but I am needing to turn to the Pros.

I have pictured from every angle below, as well as the inside of the grips.

Thanks for looking!

Welcome to the Forum CPass, and congratulations on your revolver! It looks about right to me, but there are a couple issues that may indicate a refinish, one being the nickel extractor which I think should be blue, another being the front sight insert which looks aftermarket. Smarter people than me will know for sure though. Regardless, it's a nice 28!

Kazan182 - I have a M19-5 that has a similar treatment done to the rear sight. I had originally intended on replacing it but I've found I really like the modification and as S&WIowegan said it does seem to have been done with good reason as it makes a target sight very low drag non snag. Good find on a great old gun.

New to me

I've been looking for a Model 28-2 for a couple of years to replace one from my past. I got lucky today and picked up a nice 4 inch. These things just aren't getting any cheaper in my neck of the woods so I bit. The serial number is a N5550.., which I believe dates to 1979. I can't wait to ring my ears! The grips that came with it are target models. Can someone tell me what grip would have come on this gun originally?

Pre 28 / 5 screw

The Highland County Coonhunters near Hillsboro was having a swap meet this past Saturday, I picked up this 85% shooter Pre 28 / 5 screw Highway Patrolman serial number S 1272xx while browsing the tables. This particular meet had many nice guns sorry to say that I had to turn away from a 5" 27-2. The SCSW indicates this is a 1954-1955 vintage

Of course the grips are incorrect.

I purchased a Model 28-2, 6 in. barrel, in summer of 1965, serial number S263098. The chart indicates this S/N being in range for years 66-67. In 1966 and early '67 this Highway Patrolman was my sidearm in Korea (US Army). Any thoughts on this S/N showing up in 1965?

I called my great uncle/shooting partner up the other day to chat. He seemed hurried and said he'd rather talk in person. I met up with him at which time he said he had a couple of revolvers that he wanted me to look at and decide which one I wanted. He's never had any children of his own and knows he's getting old (over 80 yoa). Over the years he's been handing out his massive S&W collection to family members with the understanding that the guns are never sold and stay in the family.

I had breakfast with him about a week later and he told me to drop by his house before I went home. He opened his safe up and handed me a mdl 27-2 and a mdl 28-2 and asked me which one I wanted. The 27-2 was a 3" barrel and the 28-2 had a 4" barrel. Being an LEO myself, the Highway Patrolman stamped on the barrel caught my eye. Even though the 27-2 was the more expensive model, I couldn't deny that I liked the HP more, so I took it home. He almost gave me the 27 as well, but I told him that one was enough for today (second revolver in 3 years he's given me).

Anyway, here's some eye candy with the last 3 digits photo-shopped out.
