The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

I am the happy owner of a M 28-2 4".
its in great condition and is very mechcanicly sound.
I am really looking forward to putting some rounds through this gun.
I forgot to mention that it is a non-pinned recessed cylinder -2 model with a SN# of N9529XX

I didn't post the SN# at first because when i got it and took the picture I hadn't had time to read all the threads concerning this great gun.
My M 28-2 4" has a recessed cylinder but a non-pinned barrel.
SN# is N9529XX

This is My son-in-laws new pride and joy.
I just picked this up yesterday for him and am very pleased with it.
I bought it from a forum member and he sent Me a gun that will help my SIL be able to shoot better with just one eye.
the enhanced front sight and rear outlined back sight will really make a difference for him.

Well, I lettered mine, S1101**, I think it is 3rd month, mine shipped May 17, 1954 to a hardware store in Kansas City, MO. Hope this helps.

Thank you . Yes , very much . Mine is a little earlier , but I have never taken time to letter it . I assumed that maybe given the model name that a good portion of the earlier ones might have been LE . Just curious .

The pictures without the Diamond Targets is how I bought it, also the Trigger shoe. I believe it is a 64 so I dressed it in Diamond Targets.

Sure some nice H.P.'s in here and some awesome quality pics, Mine don't compare!

Thanks for looking

Just bought a H.P., 5 screw serial S1134xx. Hope the link to the pic works, and thanks to Matt who's picture I'm using since it's in the klink until Jan 2.

I had a 28-3 before but sold it, and this one is much more interesting, I'll keep this youngster next to the pre 27 from July '52.

First post here

Hello all, I just purchased my first Highway Patrolman, mostly as a result of the incredible amount of information I found here. It is a Model 28, 4" barrel, no dash, serial number S189xxx, which if I am reading the previous posts correctly puts it in the 1958-59 range. It is about 98% condition, Magna diamond grips correct for this gun but a different number, no box. As soon as I can get a decent photo of it I will post here, the camera I have will not do it justice. Thanks again for all of the great info on here, it was a big help.

Well, it took me a while to finally get around to posting pics to this thread, but here they are. I was browsing a gun shop in Albuquerque in 2008 and came across this pre model number Highway Patrolman with a 6" barrel for $365. The finish is superb except at the muzzle. It's wearing Diamond Magnas, although they aren't numbered to the gun. Serial is 1203XX and the grips are 104595. Believe that puts the gun around early 1955 based on the other info in this thread. I've had it to the range twice and it's very accurate. I'm now looking for a 27 or another HP with a 4" barrel. Afraid this is going to get addicting . . .

I have a 28-2 when I checked the s/n on this thread it seems to be around '78. My question is since I got it with aftermarket grips how do I know what factory grips should have came with it? I would like to have the original grips for it.

Guess he should have read the thread here. Then he would have realized it's not a -2 and the box isn't original ;)

Also, the screws don't look "right".

Guessing it's not going to move too quickly at that price.

Edit--guess I was wrong on that one. Looks like it sold pretty quickly.

Re post with new 'shoes'

I posted this a few pages ago but since then it got Grashorns , a.k.a. ‘Executioner,’ Elk grips and the T grip both off the 'sell or trade' forum from other members. I think it looks much better now with them and in the C.O.W.S. holster.

28-2 4" N5935xx 1979-ish Pinned, not recessed.

As I have the week off , I've been hitting the gunshops in SE PA and have seen several Mod.28s on dealers shelves , many like new in box.

28-2 1978: what factory grips should have came with it?

From what I have read here, non-diamond grips, either magnas or targets. Only a letter or original box will tell which for sure. Both would be 'correct.' I got mine with well worn diamond targets that were added later. The date I see here for the switch to non diamond is 1968-ish.

Many are listed in the buy, sell, trade forum below, gunbroker or ebay.

My new 28-2 4"

Just got this HP today, and at a fair price, too...$445!
Maybe prices are coming down!

I recently purchased a 1967 28-2 357. I've looked at a lot of 28's but I haven't seen any with a swivel strap loop on the butt. Is that something that was added by a previous owner? thanks, Tedd.

newbie question on finish

I recently purchased a Highway Patrolman with 4" barrel, magna grips, DOB about '78. I realize the frame is a matte finish with "bead blasting on the rounds and top-strap". On my gun, there's a definite difference in the finish between underside and front of gun as compared to the rest. The trigger guard and front of crane (?) have a rougher finish as compared to the rest of the blueing on gun. Is this what they are referring to on the "bead blasting" or do I have something else going on here??

Also, bore rifling seems pretty shallow to me but I'm much more familiar with rifles..subjective question without a picture I know, but how pronounced should the lands and grooves be? Good luck trying to give me an idea on this without a barrel to look at!

I'll get the serial # and a pic when I get courageous enough to figure that process out! I can't say I'm a great fan of technology so I usually avoid it!

Thanks for any and all help.
