I've looked through most of the pages in this thread (getting ready to retire and not real motivated to work-2 weeks left) and decided to post a couple pictures of my 28-2 I acquired a few months back. SN N5440, so sometime around early 71-72 is my guess, and according to the guy I bought it from. Never had much luck with photobucket, but can do thumbnails. First picture is with stocks that came with it (have number inside but do not match). Second is with Ahrends Retro Targets. Needless to say, it shoots better than I do.

Just as a point of reference, my father's 28-2 Highway Patrolman 4" carries a serial number of S3054xx. According to Roy Jinks, it left the factory in January, 1968. Looks like yours was shipped not long after that - I'm guessing February, 1968.

Well, I thought I would trot out a couple of pics of my 28-2, S/N N246XXX. Carried it on duty for a number of years until the department mandated 4" (or less) guns -- switched to a no dash 66 at that point. (Sorry for the crappy pics -- was setting up to do it up right and got a "honey-do", so I just snapped a couple of quick shots)

Closest I found would be my 28-2, S2871**. That puts it in the late '66/early '67 era.

John's (paladin850xx ) dad 28 has S3054xx serial and... you know what?
I swapped a 5 for a 6, so mine is S305287. It would be nice to know how it came to the patagonia.

With that revised serial number, yours was probably made in December of '67 or January '68. Only way to know for sure would be to send in a factory letter request to Roy Jinks. Cost would be $60.

It also would tell you where it was initially shipped, and maybe that would shed some light on how it got "down south."

Of course, we all know, S&W didn't ship in numerical order. I have been watching this thread because my 4" 28-2, S275981, shipped in July, 1968 according to Roy.

So I make sure I understand this right… That would be an actual Highway Patrolman as in not model marked "28", right?
Would the target stock be correct for the non target hammer and trigger? And my 28 should have diamond relief magna stocks?

Sure, John. I'm looking for a period correct box/tools/manual and the letter would be a nice addition too. It's a shooter though, it has a couple of holster rubs (actually, I think they look more like the gun was left on a surface that condensed moisture, because it's not a "classic" holster rub).

It doesn't get brought up too often, but I have always wanted to know what the marking on all the Highway Patrolman barrels was about. It looks like a bow sided H with four dots around it. I have read some crazy stories on what that symbol means. I don't know why I waited so long to go right to the source for the answer but here it is posted with Mr. Roy Jinks' permission:

"I hate to disappoint you, but those dots have no meaning and are only a decoration. The problem is everyone wants to read something special into these markings. But there is no special meaning at all. Roy G. Jinks, Historian, Smith & Wesson"

After some of the crazy stories I have read and been told or even had guys swear was the truth (gun show stories are the greatest…) this boils down to one simple fact of life.

Sometimes the reality isn't as much fun as the fiction.
