The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

Hi guys. New to the forum here and my first post. I'll dig into the ser. # later with "The rest of the story" as old Paul Harvey would have said but I have this 28-2 HP in satin nickel with a wood presentation box. It belonged to a local sheriff who wanted my wife's uncle to trade his AR for it and the rest is history. He gave it to me last Thanksgiving and needless to say I have been giving thanks ever since! :^D Question. If it is indeed a satin nickel original what would it be worth in today's market?
SN #N568XXX so that would put it between !978 and 1980. Anyone have an idea of the value? And did they come with the satin nickel in the wood display box? Thank you!

Is the extractor star blue or nickel? Chances are the gun is a refinish, but it does look like a good job. One of the members here has the serial number range of the nickel guns, and I can't recall what it is. The best way to be certain would be a letter from Roy Jinks.

The display case wouldn't have come with it from the factory.

Just received the shipping date from Roy

I posted this a few weeks ago in the forum (http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-hand-ejectors-1896-1961/379044-cant-too-many-nicer-highway-patrolman-pic-heavy.html), but I was waiting to hear back from Roy with a ship date before I added it to this thread.

S106374 shipped May, 1954

Never been fired (after leaving the factory) or even loaded. Museum quality piece with the original box and accessories, all in perfect condition. I feel privileged to own it.

New addition from Gun Broker last week. N-frames aren't normally my thing, but I'm liking this one. Feels so much lighter than my 5" full-lug 629. S/N N195,XXX which puts it in 1973. Original stocks were included along with the Hogues shown (which I really like). Even came in a nice little Doskocil case, which wasn't listed in the auction. Far from perfect, but better than I was expecting. Looks like it was never holstered or shot much. With shipping and FFL I'm into it for a hair under $500.

The extractor is nickel. Only thing I know for sure is it was a trade for an AR-15 to the Sheriff where my wife's Aunt and Uncle lived a while back. Her Uncle worked for the County and knew him personally and the Sheriff really wanted that AR!

I like those grips too! My targets don't work with a speed loader so may change them out.

S & W Model 28-2

I have a Model 28-2 s/n N953821. I believe the date of manufacture is around 1984-85. The curious thing is thart this piece has a recessed cylinder but, barrel is not pinned. Could it be a "transition" gun before becoming the -3s?

I did not get this too long ago but it looks like it was barely used. Very faint turn line on the cylinder. Not a scratch on it. Serial N151XXX no dash 28 puts it around 1973. No box or papers unfortunately.

I am confused.

N151xxx has to be a 28-2. The "no dash" or 4 screw HPs were from 1957-1961 and S serial as well.

Maybe I am reading it wrong?....

Nope! You are correct technically:D It is a 28-2 but they only stamped 28 in the yoke. If you look closely, there is a "27" in smaller font under the "28" so this was originally supposed to be a model 27.

Interesting.....I've seen a few 28s...can't say I've seen one stamped like that before. Thanks for the pic!

My 28-2 has a red front sight while most are black. Anyone know what the significance of this is? I was told a number of HP's went to NY state police with the red sights but unable to verify.

I'm guessing your serial number is in the N5XXXXX range? Most all by that time were being shippedvwith the red ramp/white outline rear sights.
