The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

Model 28-2 N Frame

I've owned this handgun for almost 35 years. Still a good shooter. I noticed when I first purchased this used weapon,
that the cylinder had a letter J scratched on the face. For years I just figured some dumb *** ID marked it. My stupid question is, are the 357 magnum cylinders interchangeable between N and J frame guns.

No they are not interchangeable. Frame window would be significantly oversized for a j frame cylinder in an N frame. The J is probably just a factory stamping with some sort of significance. Do you have photos?

I just wish my 4" HP was 2" longer. Other than changing grips to full-size it was perfect out of the box (purchased in '73). I'm looking for another 28 with 6" barrel I can use for hunting. All my S&W's are N frames... I have big hands and like to shoot them :)

I have 28-2 6" s/n N538xxx and have owned it for 20+ years. recently the hammer has been difficult/hard to pull back on 1 or 2 cylinders, the other are normal. I have re-cleaned and re-oiled the gun and this seems to help a little but the hammer is still hard to pull on a couple cylinders. Any ideas for a self fix?

See if there is a tight spot when you turn the cylinder. Also make sure your ejection rod is tight. I would lube the cylinder where the rear loc pin is and the front rod locater is too. It has to be a cylinder problem if it's binding on two chambers.

Could be a bent ejector rod too.....

I can add one to the list - 28-2 6" with target grips - serial number N5813xx from 1979 I believe. Price tag on the box end label says $327.00.

This thread made me dig mine out. It's a 28-2, SN: N58XX, 4" barrel, P&R. I bought it about ten years ago at Clark's near Shreveport, where I was told it spent its early life on the hip of a Bossier Parish sheriff's deputy. It looked it, too; it's got a good bit of external pitting and the chambers were pretty rough as well, though the bore isn't too bad. I had them do a trigger job, hone the chambers and give it a bead blast blue. It came out presentable, but not gorgeous. The trigger is nice and smooth, and the gun loves 158 grain cast bullets at about 1150 fps. I've carried it as well, and shot it in IDPA competition. I can't think of a better "working" gun.

I have two that I cherish. The first is my 4" 28-2 that has been my "go to" gun for many years. Like my 14 year old Lab it is faithful and easy to hang out with.

The second is my 6" 28 no dash. I found it for sale in an Oregon gun store and well, you guys know the rest.

Just bought off my buddy

Sorry, I'm not sure about forum protocol. Just bought 28-2, SN N323xx. Yes only 5 digits. It has been modified/personalized. Pachmayr Presentation Grips, barrel venting via 2slits near muzzle, swirl-like etching on trigger and hammer. Under grips I see a circled N, and an E inside a triangle.

My main question is about the finish. Looks flat gray to me. From reading the inter webs, I learned that most were finished in blue. Would y'all think that the gray finish I have here is the result of stripping the bluing. Or is it possible that the revolver was shipped by SW this way?
Thank you for your help.
Again, I apologize for protocol. Although I have to admit I am now a senior citizen, I bought my first firearm 15 months ago, and I now have 8...or 9.
This is my first revolver.
Thanks again!

I just received this from a member here. I believe he under estimated the condition ;) . It's a #N243xxx which is close to the #N224xxx that I bought from another member.

Glad you are enjoying it Doc. I will take the "underestimation" as a compliment!

I doubt the finish is factory and protocol is intact, however,,, you would get extra points for photos

Welcome to the Forum Rab! I can't think of a better way to introduce yourself to revolvers than a Model 28. It's how I got started more than 40 years ago.

There is little doubt your 28 was modified after it left the factory. The gun was designed as a Law Enforcement firearm and there was little embellishment performed. There are, of course, a few exceptions, being the very few nickel models shipped, and some special order shiney ones (WSP Commemorative models were shipped bright blue, just like the Model 27). Most came out matte blue, and I'm not aware of any models being shipped magnaported. All were square butt when shipped. Almost all were either 4" or 6" barrels, with a very few being shipped with 8 3/8" and IIRC a few 5" as well. The most desirable is the 28-1, of which one is currently documented and belongs to azmick.

I would bet yours was plated after leaving the factory, chances are it is hard chromed. Pictures always help!

Again, welcome to the best place on the interwebs!
