The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

I picked my HP up in January. It is a -2 and is pictured here with N-frame target grips. It did come with its correct Magnas but I prefer the look and feel of the targets on this particular piece. It is a tack driver and fires full house mags downrange even more smoothly than the 6" L-frame I had.

Picked it up for $479 plus the governments share.. I think I did very well..

SN is N5896XX

Bore diameters of Highway Patrolman barrels?

I searched the forum several times and didn't pull up the information I'm looking for. Possibly poor searching on my part ......

In any event, what do you Patrolman shooters find for bore diameter when you slug your barrels? Was it consistent enough through the years that you feel confident in telling me what to expect when I slug a 28-2?

Or, looking at this question from a different angle, is there one sizing diameter that gives best accuracy with cast bullets in a Highway Patrolman of that vintage?

Every one of mine shoot better than I can with .358 cast bullets and .357 jacketed. The absolute most accurate HP here is the 6" 28-3

Rescued 28-2 Becomes a "Combat Patrolman"

Posted previously the story on this one I'd rescued:
28-2-4.jpg

The Ahrends stocks I put on it just felt too small.
After trying out Kurac's new combats, it was apparent that this gun need a set, too.
As fitting would be necessary, I contacted Jennifer Culina who kindly furnished a unfinished set.
So, finally, the finished job, a very satisfying handfull:

Well, when i was young and poor,I used cast bullet reloads exclusively as I couldn't afford store-boughts.

I used the Lyman U358156 gas check bullet SWC,sized to .357".
With my own brass and scrounged lead,I figured it cost me about 2 cents/bullet.
That bullet shot well and I never had any leading problems.
I did not slug the barrel of that 28-2.

Have we noticed the difference in left-side barrel markings yet? No pics of my S247XXX (uh, I just figured out where the delete key is) but there's enough good ones in this thread to show the rounded vs. squared S's and the elongated vs. "normal" ampersand. Doesn't look like it's just a S or N prefix thing; mine has the rounded S's and elongated ampersand. Could someone explain the asymmetrical .400 semi-target hammer on mine?
Beginner's mistake; it's a 28-2, 4"

Howdy all - first time poster, and this seems to be the best place to get some help.

Saw a blued Model 28-2 with six-inch barrel at one of my local gun stores; smooth target stocks (didn't see a S&W logo, so probably not original) and red-ramp sight (and from all I gather, that's probably not original either). I didn't have enough time to examine it, but I called later and was told the serial number started with an "N" prefix, so it could have been made anytime after 1969. Only problem - they're asking $900 for it.

While I know older N-frames are going for a premium, has anyone heard of any Highway Patrolman variants that would command that much? An empty part of my soul really wants a golden-era N-frame and knows it may involve blowing some serious dough, but the frugal part of me hates to be taken advantage of (unless her name's Debbie and she has a substantial trust fund) ...

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Some but not that one....an original nickel or 28-1 would be two examples.

if your in Mass. I've seen that one

Thanks, Paul - yep, I'm in Western Mass. And obviously no, this is neither a 28-1 or nickel ... the gun store I saw it in doesn't have a reputation for willingness to haggle, so I think I'll let this one pass. I wouldn't mind paying in that neighborhood for a good Model 27, but it seems a bit steep for what's otherwise a great revolver.

You know how hard it's been finding any pre-lock N-frames; sometimes they crop up at some of the stores near Boston, but get snapped up pretty quickly.

Thanks again,

Steve

Just got a 6" to go with my 4". Serial number N5749xx est 1979
If they made other lengths,I'd be looking for another.
