The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

Hi, I'm new to this forum, found it after some googling about after I got my first revolver at an auction a few weeks back. I got it for SEK1275, about US$200 and finally picked it up in Stockholm today. It's a 6" highway patrolman with diamond target (i think at least) grips, serial no S1824xx. The blueing has some markings, mostly on the front sides of the barrell, could it be from holster wear? I kind of like the used rugged impression it gives, so I'm not gonna do any re-finishing on that part, might put some oil on the grips to keep them in good condition. I can't find any 28 marking anywhere, so I guess it's a pre-28, where are the model numbers supposed to be?

Mechanically it seems all good, haven't shot it yet but that will change real soon! =) I'd also like to get some history on it, didn't get anydocumentation but I might be able to find out about previous owners in Sweden. Is it possible to get any information from Smith & Wesson?

[
That's a great deal. It would be interesting to know its history, specifically how it ended up in Sweden.

I have been waiting to jump in!

I have been watching this thread with great enjoyment for some time now. I finally go a picture of my kids together so hear they are. The 4 inch in front is a 28-2 (S2513xx, 1965?) The one in the middle is a 6 inch 28-2 (N1977xx, 1973?) and the one in the rear is a 6 inch 28-2 (S2271xx, 1962?). All the numbers match except the stocks on the 4inch gun, although they are the correct diamond grips. I have question marks on all the dates because I have not lettered any of these guns. I picked up the first one to replace one I had let go back in the 1960's, and the other two just seemed to follow me home at different times, if you know what I mean. ;)

Update on my 28-2. I took the side cover off this past week and took everything out. There was some small crud in there but nothing major. Cleaned up every little piece with gun solvent, wiped it down and lightly oiled it. The sear had very slight wear on one edge only and you could feel a little nub on that side. Looked like a factory bur. So I took 220 grit paper and smoothed it out again. Put it all back together and while pulling the trigger slowly it felt alot smoother than before. Everything moved easier all thru the trigger pull. I love this gun and can't wait for warmer weather to go out and shoot it now. One good thing about this cold weather is I can stock up on .38 practice ammo at the gun shop! Another question, good and bad answers accepted. I'm planning on using this for deer next fall. I would like to get a good set of rubber Pachmyer or Hogue grips for it so when its cold out I can have more control with it. Any opinions as to what is a good grip to buy? I Looked on cheaper than dirt and Sportsmans guide and there's a ton of them.

Pachmayr Grippers should do the trick...Just keep your eye open for a set of them..shouldnt run you back more than 25 bucks off Ebay or the Fourm here...Can g owrong for shooting...

and if your going to use it for Deer..Dont let this COLD stop ya...You are going to have to get used to anyways...No better time than right now...

I put 250 rounds thru my 28 off the deck last week in -10 degree weather..All it did was beg for more.....But I got too cold:D:D:D:D:D

Just picked this one up today. From Florida via auction. 1955 vintage, 5 Screw, all matching including grips. S 1222xx serial number. Still tight and perfect bore. Some slight freckling on the left front of the muzzle, left side of front of frame and corresponding location on the cylinder. Wet holster maybe. The pictures are from the Auction site.

This is a 5 digit serial therefore a Early 70's gun, not a 80's revolver...

Does it have a N stamp on the Grip Frame..

Thanks...

I'm the one who wants to bring every puppy home from the pound.
Or maybe its every abused and neglected revolver I find?
This one was the victim of Bubba using a bench grinder, it appeared, to round butt it.
Extractor rod was Vise-Grip chewed, and big patches of blue were gone on the barrel.
The target trigger had been partially smoothed.
And there was .004" endshake.
A nasty set of Hogue grips were thrown in the trash at the store.
Polished and tuned the action with a Wolfe spring set.
Got it back together tonight with a new extractor, added a target hammer and smoothed out all of Bubba's hacking.
Touched up the finish with Blue Wonder and added a set of Ahrends stocks.

After any final tuning, I'm think a hard chrome finish might be in order.
Or maybe its time to try my hand at rust-bluing?

Great rescue....you should offer to take in strays and then return them to owner
