The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

Ok, Allen, I finally pulled the grips on my Highway Patrolman to get the serial number.
120xxx.
It's a four screw, which according to the database, makes time of mfg. late 1956-7, which is right where I thought it was.
Can you narrow it down a bit, or is this as close as I can get without a letter?

And thanks for all the work you put into this thread.

Boat.

M1AG30;

I'd pass on that one if it was me...at least at anywhere near that price. This was NOT one of the 'FHP' 5in guns and is not factory finished, although I suppose it could be factory Refinished.

I'm the one who wants to bring every puppy home from the pound.
Or maybe its every abused and neglected revolver I find?

Bravo on this one. Great job. You didn't ask for opinions, but if the finish looks as good in real life as it does in the photo, I'd leave it the way it is.

Pretty well decided to leave it.
Stocks need work, however.
What I'd really like are a set of Kurac's new targets.
But that would be like putting lipstick on a pig!

My 28-2, S# N229xxx, features a .500" target hammer and .500" serrated target trigger. The gun is in great shape, but there is nothing that indicates a factory refinish. Is it possible these were original to the gun, or were they aftermarket? The SCSW indicates a .400" semi-target hammer and either .265" serrated or .400" smooth trigger as standard.

New to me, Grandfather's Highway Patrolman

Hi all, just joined the S&W Forum, my 1st post.

Recently acquired my Grandfather's old HP. I did the research and found out that it's a 1954-55, 5 screw, 4" gun.

GF died in 1977, my uncle put the gun in his storage unit, in it's holster and there it sat until about a week ago.

The cylinders pitted where each side made contact with the leather as well as the trigger guard. So, the gun is not pretty. However, I'm thrilled to now have it in my pistol collection. I had a local gunsmith clean / lube it. Planning on going to the range tomorrow.

I remember, in the early 70's, when I lived with my grandfather during the Summers in Northern California, the Symbionese / Patty Hurst / SLA gang was at large. My grandfather carried this S&W HP, he called it his "Symbionese" gun.

I know I need to post pic's, will do so when I get to my laptop.

My Mod 28

Hello all,

I have been lurking here for a while, gathering info. Later tonight I will post a picture of my Mod 28, see S202xxx which I make to be a 1959 edition. It belonged to my father before it belonged to me and is a good shooter. I has been both of our carry sidearm for hunting.

...I'm thrilled to now have it in my pistol collection.

If I were you, I'd be thrilled, too. And I'd be happy the old gun has remained in the family for over fifty years. And remember, "pretty" doesn't matter all that much as long as the gun will put the bullet where you want it to go. Love the photo of it, by the way.

I'd love to stumble across a 5-screw HP!

Hey everyone. New to the forum, and wanted to share the HP I picked up this past weekend. Trying to figure if I want to refinish it myself or send it to S&W. Might just leave it like it is. First thing I gotta do is get rid of these horrible grips. Serial is N523XXX. It also has a light stamp on the inside of the crane...C13. Any idea what that may be? Thanks!

Thanks Watchdog. Since posting, a few days ago, this 54-55 HP has now moved into my #1 position. At the range it shot fantastic. It's now moved into my primary home defense gun.

Just picked this one up! And she is a shooter! May keep this one as my trail/hiking/woods revolver! With 38 special 158 grain SWC it feels like a 22. Came with a Bianchi Ranger holster. Next up will be some speed loaders. :)

The feeling of a .22: that's exactly what I thought when I had mine in use the last time. And that was with some hotter stuff.

Some 20 years ago when I had my first M 27 and no idea about the danger when copying just some ancient handloads created by the inventors of the Magnum stuff I loaded (DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME) 15.3 grains of Hercules 2400 under a 158 LSWCGC bullet. My, what a sound and what a recoil. We soon changed the 13.5 grains of 2400 after this and it was well and enough.

But if I had tried this with an L-frame or even a K-frame I don't want to think about the result that might have happened.

Add my name to the list of people who will tell you to leave the finish as it is. Plus, you send it off to Smith, you probably won't see it again for about a year.

First thing I gotta do is get rid of these horrible grips.

Aren't those horrible? Pachmayrs, right? I just replaced a pair exactly like that on a revolver I bought last week. Some people like them, though, so you might could get fifteen or twenty bucks for them, I don't know.

Your HP was probably made sometime around 1978.

Welcome to the Smith & Wesson Forum. The knowledge base here is extensive.

Your revolver has been nickel plated somewhere down the line. Looks like a good job too since the trigger, hammer and rear sight weren't plated. Take the stocks off and look for factory rework marks.

Swapped out those old Pachmayrs for some targets I picked up from fellow forum member waffles. Looks much better!
