The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

I was just out shooting my 28-2 4 inch the other day. It is superbly accurate.

I have this thing though for the nickel S&Ws so I had thought about selling it and some other blued S&Ws to chase after more nickeled ones. I really think that the trigger on my 28-2 is probably the best of mine though. So it is back in the safe.

I don't have much info. My friend just took a 3 screw Highway Patrolman in on a trade. The gun is stamped with an 8 overstamping the 7 in model 27. I have no other details, but will try to get them and/or see it soon.

My recently purchase 28-2 also has a TT &TH Serial #N2248xx

Did some model 28s come with the TT&TH option from the factory?

They were offered with a .400" semi-target hammer and a .400" smooth trigger. I like yours because it looks like it actually has been used for duty. Yours was roughly dated between 1974-1977. One can assume around the 74-75 year with your serial number.

Usually partial to wood, I have Culina grips on order for this 28-2. But in this case, I don't mind the look of the rubber Pachmayr Presentation grips. They just seem to suit the gun.

Model 28.

I have in hand right now a 4 screw 4 inch M-28 marked serial 20487X. Been used yes.but it is very accurate.. Blue wear from carry. It has a set of Mershon(predecessor to Pachmayr) grips on it but I also got what I think are the original grips too. In the safe in the garage I have a 5 screw 6 inch gun in exc. condition. I had put a red dot sight on it and shot rabbits pretty frequently eating the garden to as much as 80 yds. over a rest of course. It has the diamond grips but don't know if they are original as they have a lot of wear..and the gun is very nice and not refinished. I will get the serial and post tomorrow.

TT & TH

I found a 4" Model 28-2 in excellent condition, Serial #N5204xx. This gun has the wide target trigger and target hammer. According to SCSW the Model 28 never shipped in that configuration. I've seen a lot of 28-2s, but never with TT TH. Anyone ever see one like this? It s possible a former owner sent it back to S&W for modification. W/O a letter I may never know how it shipped.

I passed on the above-mentioned 28-2 with TT & TH because it could not be confirm the gun was in original condition. Continued looking, and have in my hand another very nice 4" 28-2 with TT & TH, Serial #503XXX. This one came to me in the original serial numbered box, showing it shipped with the TT/TH configuration, complete with original Magna and Target stocks. This gun appears to have been unfired, except for factory testing. Apparently the target trigger and hammer was not as uncommon on the 28-2s as I had originally thought.

My light box got destroyed last summer during our move, so I just shot a couple of pictures of the 28-2 with the point 'n shoot so you could see it. I will try to get some better pictures later.

Here is my 28-2 serial number N159430 with the grips it came with and with Target grips and Presentation Box that I added. Box liner has been redone.

I recently inherited my Dad's .357 CTG Highway Patrolman's revolver. I found this serial number S323258, which lists here as 1968--1969 S305000 to S329999. I guess it is the salesmans edition, since it is nickel rather than black. My Dad carried this service piece, and I would love to know anything about it, such as ship date and current value.
