You must have done a fine job raising your son....he did pick a very nice revolver out of that group.

If you are wanting a 58, you can do as I did, and post a 'WTB - want to buy' ad here on the forum (classifieds). Both of mine came as a result of the generosity and helpfulness of the members here....this is undoubtedly the best firearms forum on the WWW.

[A bit of history, we worked together for several years, and were shooting buddies and good friends, he moved away or we would still be shooting together].

Here is my 41 Mag story.
You see I am, and have always been, since the late 1960's early 1970's a 45 ACP and a 44 Mag kind of guy.
The first handgun I carried out of the Academy was a 4" blue Mod 29.

However, one day durring in service training, while at lunch, I went to the Gun Store near the Academy, and bought a Blue Mod 58, and several boxes of ammo. Some of the 210 Lead Police load, and some of the 210 full power magnum load, and a few speed loaders... All at a good price as the owner knew me well. Also being an Elmer Keithite, I knew all about the 41 Mag.

A few days later I was at the range. The Mod 58 shot great. Actually I could tell no difference in the recoil between 44 Mag loads and 41 Mags loads.
I carried full power 44 Mag loads [I practiced a lot] on duty, and found the 41 mag to be most excellent.
It was very accurate, and I had no problem shooting 100% on the Dept Qual course with it.

...and then you sold it and now 35 YEARS later want to be a Cult Member....well at least your heart is in the right place.... You could at least try to talk Sebago Sam out of his converted 58...that way you could at least say you have a 58 and not adding a caliber to your inventory....

For those of you looking for a 58, Hoffman's Gun Center in Newington, Ct. has three 58-1s in blue and one nickel that they only want $599.99 for...that is over $100 under wholesale...

Well let me take a lood and the Mod 58 two different ways.
First from my perspective as a 44 Mag shooter. My first Centerfire rifle was a Ruger 44 Mag. So when I wanted a DA revolver, my first DA revolver was a 44 Mag S&W. I used it for many years, and when I graduated the police Academy, my first Duty gun was a 4" S&W 44 Mag.

IF S&W had made the Mod 58 in 44 mag I would have definately had one or two of them...

Now early in my carear I bought the Mod 58 mentioned above.
IT was an excellent revolver, shot great, very accurate. The 41 "Police loads" 210 SWC" at around 950fps very controlable, the 210 Jacketed full power loads were controlable for me as I has shot a lot of full power 44 Mag loads and that is what I carried on duty.
Baised on its own ballistics the 41 Mag is a great cartridge. Some Police Depts adopted it. Amarillo, San Francisco, I think maybe San Antonio, and a few others.

I know Evan Marshall in Detroit carried one of them for a while.
And I know some Chicago Cops carreid them as "No2's. Also a Secret Service Agent on a certain Presidental detail carried 2 of them at all times.

I carried mine as a foul weather gun, and off duty as well.
I had 2 hammers fitted to it, one was a target hammer, I was used to them on my 44's, the other had the spur ground off. MyMod 58 was a slock gun, with a good action job and a great shooter.

The only problem for ME with the Mod 58 is that it was in 41 Mag.

Nothing wrong with the 41 Mag, but I was set up for the 44 Mag. I load on a Star Progressive Loader, cast and size my own bullets, have beaucoup brass, speed loaders, and a rifle for the 44 Mag, etc.

So for me the "problem" with a 41 Mag, was mostly Logistics.

If I had never had the 44 Mag rifle, and I had bought a 41 Mag first, then I would be a wayward soul like Superman...

For those of you that do not know Bob [Super Man] was using the 38 Super, way way back in the day, a long long time, before the IPSC elite ever discovered it. Like wise he used the 41 Mag from the start.

We go back many years, and as I am a 44 Mag, and a 1911 45 ACP kind of guy I like to to tease him about the 38 Super, and the 41 Magnum.

Both are excellent calibres.

I still think S&W made a mistake not making the Mod 58 back in the day, in 44 Mag, 45 ACP/AR, and 45 Colt, too.
 
I do not want to own a "Modified" Mod 58. That would be a travesty.

George Nonte offered to sell me his Modifed Mod 58, he changed to 45 "Long Colt". He had written some magazine articals about it.
I turned him down, but I did buy the Pachmayer grips off of it for $5.00.
They were the first Pachmayer grips I had ever handled.
I used them on my duty gun for several years.

I vote him in...anyone who used a double rifle to shoot a murderous big ape at 6 feet should be allowed in, M 58 or not..
I think he would be the keynote speaker at the next meeting as well...

It is a chopped down 58....now I know how much certain individuals here feel about 'modified from original configuration' guns, but this one is pretty cool ;) ....and since it is a Model 58...

NICE! I'd love to see a 3in round butt 58 as a limited production item. Better yet in stainless , a '658' if you will. C'mon Lew Horton's!
 
Sheriff...I think NE would make a great Keynote speaker...how can I vote against a 30+ year friend...

I saw another of Belhert's shortened 58s a while back. The front lug had not been modified so the barrel was probably 3/8" longer than the one pictured above. A 3" round butt 658 would be great...

I am surprised that Smith just hasn't come out with a 4" fixed sight 629...after all they have a 3" round butt...

I agree, a round butt 3" 658 would be an immediate purchase for me...those Belhert's are awesome as well....
 
I was always intrigued by the Nonte and Behlert chop jobs, but could never justify buying another 58 to customize.

My ol buddy and I have shared too many miles, scars, and adventures for me to change a thing on it.

Also remember many of these Modified Mod 58's were done back when the Mod 58 was a standard production item.

I must say I really like the way that Behlert Mod 58 looks and I bet she handles sweet.

Also I actually shot the Gorilla with a 458 Win Bolt rifle. I was wishing for my double thats for sure.

Wishing for my double, yes I was. He charged me from 12 yards, I shot him in the head at 6 yards.

The bolt gun, with a little luck,[and a lot of practice], well handled, saved my life, no doubt.
 
A 6 yard head shot at a gorrillian with a 458 must've been horrifyingly graphic and relieving all at once in a hurry... couldn't imagine one storming towards me! Welcome to the '58 club and hope you get one soon pard :->
 
Applying for Membership

With this post I am officially applying for membership to "The Unofficial 58 Club". I picked it up the week after Christmas. It came with numbered diamond magnas. I bought the stags at a gun show years ago, $35 if I remember correctly. Thinking about adding some medallions. What do you think? Serial # is S2575xx. Wish I could learn how to post large pictures like you guys.
