I agree with those who extoll the virtue of the modern missle systems.... but.... The ship must still be seaworthy in order to ride out the vagaries of the sea. If it flips over and sinks, all those missles aren't going to do much good. I believe that that was one of the original complaints.

The U.S.S. Monitor had cutting edge weaponry... which was amazingly preserved during its 100+ year presence at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean...

It seems like anytime you try something new stuff breaks, remember the USS Thresher and all that fifty odd years ago.

Thing is nowadays with the safety nazi's if something doesn't work they abandon it

"Plus I'd bet they can/do have nuclear tipped missiles and those will screw up a whole fleet's day in one shot!"

If they don't get destroyed by anti missile defense systems.
Check out Iron Dome.

If it's even a small nuclear weapon (a few megatons or so) you could set it off a mile or even two out and cause havoc.

Why I love atomic weapons, close is good enough :D

That sure is a weird looking boat...

Takes some getting used to...
reminds me of the Merrimac.

reminds me of the Merrimac.

You mean the CSS Virginia, not the Northern named USS Merrimack, which was a normally rigged sailing ship. :p;) Same ship, but it was named the Virginia by the South after being raised and modified into an ironclad. But since the North won the war, the folks that write the history books used the US (Northern) designation when they wrote their history books.

I stand corrected:o
