It appears that the money from illegal drugs has now dwarfed the money from illegal alcohol during prohibition,. The results are that mighty cartels have been created that have the power of civilian armies. They are using all this illegal money to expand their operations and in the process they are making war on citizens here as well as those south of our border.

These massive cartels control untold and untaxed tens of billions of dollars, if not hundreds of billions, and they use that money to expand and to protect their organizations. While Homeland Security is focused on reading our emails, they ignore the real threats that are flowing across our borders like giant rivers of poison.

This kind of money can be used to corrupt any society from the lowest levels all the way to the top. While Mexico is catching the brunt of it, more and more the corruption is flowing into the USA and into our government at many levels.

These cartels represent a threat to this nation that is far greater than any threat from the middle east, and yet our borders remain basically unprotected while we waste hundreds of billions to send armies off to the middle east. If we can't win a simple drug war at home that is reeking havoc on our nation how the **** do we expect to win a war many thousands of miles and several cultures away from here that is not impacting us much at all.

Do a little research and Google on Mexican drug cartels. These cartels buy their military grade guns by the ship loads from international gun traffickers, and the silly idea they need to pick up 5 or 6 here and there from sales in the USA is just silly.

Washington state has arrested 745 drivers in six months for driving and testing positive for thc (normal rate is about 1000/year). There aren't any recreational stores selling pot yet in WA. Pot is still illegal for those under 21 and lawyers are crying foul over young drivers being arrested for driving with thc in their blood (under 21 the limit is anything above zero).

Apparently legalizing pot sent the message that it was OK to drive stoned.

I suggest Washington state send another message (and send it soon) that it is not OK to drive stoned. It may take a while, but they need to start a publicity campaign and they need to start writing some DUI tickets. Unless your state is populated with morons they will soon get the message that it is not OK to drive stoned.

Treat drugs like booze. Legalize, tax heavily, make them socially undesirable. Control the sources and manufactures, regulate the lines of distribution, taxing it at every step.

We are losing the war on drugs, and spending money we don't have to fight it. We help gangs get rich and powerful, same as the Volstead Act help organized crime start up. Eventually, Darwinism will take care of the problem. Having legal sources puts the cartels out of business, and the taxes help to bury the users.

What we are doing now is not working. Doing more of the same is not going to work any better. But is does make for good reality TV shows.

You know that profits from illegal drugs is subject to taxation just the same as profits from legal drugs. Tax evasion is what brought down Al Capone.

Just one interesting aspect to this, when people started moving towards legalization of pot in California the biggest opponents were the growers of Marijuana. And the bigger the operations the more they spoke up against it. It seems contradictory, why would growers not support legalization? The reason. Profits. Right now pot is selling for hundreds of dollars an ounce, more depending on the quality. And this for a weed that anyone with a backyard garden can easily grow. If it was legalized everyone would be doing it and the market would tank. These growers, and the drug cartels, would literally go out of business overnight. So think about this. We spend billions of dollars each year fighting pot growers and incarcerating drug dealers and users. And who are these folks that get caught and go to jail? The lowest on the pole. How often do professional people go to jail? And I've known of many of these folks who smoke regularly. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. We've been fighting the "drug war" for over 40 years, 2 generations, without results. We're into the 3rd generation now and I see nothing to indicate things will improve. To the contrary, as the writer points out, as the money grows so will the corruption and all the negative consequences. In summary, the obscene profits are the key and until this changes nothing else will.

The problem with progressives is they believe in utopia but have absolutely no concept of reality. And never the two shall meet.

legalize all drugs, period. who should say what others do for recreation?imo its none of their darn business, as long as it doesnt harm others-who cares? use same rules as alcohol, no minors no driving while intoxicated etc.
if you remove the mystique a lot of kids wouldnt even care, let alone be drawn to the stuff.
i know some will say that this would cause a burden to be placed on our medical services etc. but a portion of the money not spent on the "war" could be spent on education and hospitals.
if you want to point a finger at people who are going to cost the medical system ,take a look at all the non-exercising fat people out there , seems there are a lot more fat people out there now than there ever used to be. their choice so be it , but i find it sad and distressing to see obese children .

it all boils down to personal responsibility, or it should anyway.

Only if it gets reported, and what fool will report an income from selling drugs? Not too many that stupid.

This obviously isn't just about pot. Its all about the heavier stuff.

Even advocates of pot are not on board for legalizing heavier stuff, but dealing with marijuana is a place to start. It's also generational, the older a person is the less likely they are to support legalization (pot) while younger folks wonder what all the fuss is about.

The Number One Reason why public education is such a waste of money is drug use. And I find it ironic that at a time when tobacco use is being actively discouraged, tobacco users are stigmatized and belittled, the health problems caused by tobacco are well known, that pot smoking is somehow "chic". Tax it? Instead of "revenooers" going after moonshiners they'll be going after pot growers. That will be interesting.

How much of that cartel money do you suppose makes it's way into the coffers of the politicians in DC? More than you think, I'm bettin'.

Immigration reform????? Border security???? Hmmmmm???
