the white dot fell out.....

On the Nitesiters I heard some other talk of them on the neg side. So... I got Glonation paint. I like it & it works for me. Here's a link & a pic of my Shield.

Glow in the Dark Paint. Super Bright, Super Long Glow. Glows for hours instead of minutes.

Shielded

The glow in the dark paint is interesting but it requires a light source to recharge and unlike a battery cell the energy absorbed into the paint cannot be stored.

My front sight never sees light due to the holster and my pocket so glow in the dark paint would not be practical.

Tritium on the other hand is a chemical reaction so it does not require a light source.

Just my 2 cents.

Years ago there was one guy at the range on the ground on his hands and knees holding up the range "This is a outdoor range" we finely asked if we could help him find something. He showed us his gun said he lost his front sight dot!!!!! He thought it was some kind of insert:eek:.. We told him it's only a paint chip and fixed him right up on the spot "so to speak".. In any case white or any color you want auto touch up works well drys fast too. nail polish works well as well as model paint.. I use nail polish most of the time.. I have had this happen many times with a few guns over the years. George

I have 2 M&P 40's with the factory night sights. Each little glow in the dark tritium tube has a ring of white paint around it to make it easier to see in intermediate lighting conditions where the tritium isn't bright enough but it is still dark enough it is hard to see the sights. On both of them, the white paint on the front sight flaked off after a couple of hundred rounds. My sister's M&P 9 has the same sights and she has I think about 400 to 500 rounds through her's without any problems. They are sending me new front sights on my word alone (i.e. I don't have to send the pistols back for them to look at) suggesting this is a common problem. Annoying. Other than that I love the M&P, but next time I'm going with Trijicons.

Whether or not you plan to change them in the future, send the gun back.

S&W needs to get every single one of these back, so that they wake up and realize that something needs to be done. It needs to start costing them enough profit that they finally do so.

Seriously, this has been a problem for years, and with the entire M&P line -- even the newest guns.

I used a straight pin with some white nailpolish after cleaning the sight with alcohol on a q-tip. Practice several drops on a paper first. Worked fine I will see how it holds up.

I couldn't stand the thought of sending it off, my permt just came in and i need the practice....

All right, here's what I ended up doing...

cleaned, cleaned, and cleaned
drop of white nail polish in hole (front sight only)
dried overnight
drop of Siteglo (SiteGlo - Glow in the Dark Gun Sight Paint) paint on applicator that comes with it, on top of white nail polish, then drop of Siteglo paint on rear dots
let dry (I left out for 2 days and didn't fire for an additional 2days)

here's some picts

Looks great and I bet you had a good time with it.... Congrats.

For those discussing night sights- I've used them since they were first available and have 2 suggestions:
1. You only need a tritium insert in the front sight-if they're close enough to engage in the dark, you're not going to be needing rear sights.

2. The M&Ps come with a light rail. A light allows you to identify your target and see your sights, costs about the same as night sights and makes the night sights obsolete.

My white dot lost also.

On July 23rd with my M&P 9 throwing my 520th round at a target and suddenly front sight is black… Tried cleaning, didn't work, S&W said to send it back, which I did. 10 Days after S&W received I called to get an update…. Told they are on shut down, be back in 3 weeks. I don't pay for a product to have to fix a manufacturing defect myself. But 5 week repair for a simple dot insert? I'm not a happy S&W camper I asked to have it sent back to me I'll find someone more qualified to fix sights that the manufacturer. I'm kind of disgusted by the whole experience of owning this pistol, which I found to be very accurate. When yo customer using a toothpick and paint fixes your manufacturing screw up after that you… Don't be surprised when business drops.

Bretwvu,
Been in guns for about 35 years myself. It happens no big deal! You don't want the dot to fall off then get black sights.. I'm not being a hard as# at all.. It's your choice to send it back and I can see you being made about there shut down time and ya maybe they should have said something about that to you at the time you talked to them.. It happens to just about every maker out there. Most people handle it them selves. I know there are some people that can't pick up a hammer or screwdriver or haven't got the ability to fix things.. I can understand that.. Rest assured Smith & Wesson will return your gun with a brand new dot on the sight and it will work great! Don't forget there not impervious to all the chemicals we may use to clean the gun and bore of the barrel.. Hope you get the satisfaction of the warranty repair as there the best in the industry and so is there customer service! Bes of luck to you!
Please enjoy your gun when it is returned! George

Wow, got my shield in Feb 2013 (mfr Jan) and the second time out the front sight white dot was gone.. So to sum it up, they are still making & shipping m&p's with crappy white dots... I know it's not a "big" problem but damn, if customers con tinue to have the same problem s&w should fix it at the factory.. What else will go wrong?? First & last s&w purchase for me

If you want to sell the crappy shield for a fair price let me know:rolleyes:

If you want to pay what I have into it you can have it... It's obvious they have a issue with the white dots and it does bother me.. I paid for a new shield, in new condition without obvious flaws or issues and that's not what I got... FIX THE FACTORY ISSUE S&W!! They have a problem, just fix it, is that too much to ask from a company?? My families life could depend on it, I sure as hell hope they didn't "over-look" any other problems...

Yet another white dot

Me too, just got my Shield which was back ordered for over 6 months and on the 90th round I saw the little white dot from the front sight fly over my right shoulder. you would think that they would have it fixed by now.

Front sight dot on my 9c fell out. Called S&W customer service. they asked if I wanted a new sight or paint it myself. Asked for a new sight, said they'd send it right out. In the mean time used nail polish. At the least I get a spare sight. At most they spend more money on a problem that we seem to be able handle, but they can't.
