They called 'em Space Guns!

Sorry for the thread drift, but I couldn't resist.. This is the Ljutic Spacegun. A weird stab at a unique trap shooter by the world class Ljutic Gun Company. I shot with probably 1000 different shooters back on the tournament circuit, and saw only one. For obvious reasons the thing never became a popular item :D:D

Just picked up one similar a few weeks ago. Always liked the style. Had it to the range last week, and from a bench, it is more accurate than most .22 rifles I have shot. It would make an excellent squirrel rig, if I could hunt with a semi-auto pistol here in PA. Makes a nice companion to my Victor.

Isn't that Han Solo's blaster? LOL

The last squirrel I shot was with a 17-4, the PA Game Commission is Ok with that.

Interesting pistol. for sure.

Here's my Supermatic Tournament. Was given the one bull bbl, walnut grips and a couple mags. I looked at getting a space bbl for it and the bbl would have cost more than my pistol so I'll just keep my Terrestrial HS as I found it.

Yup, still call 'em Space Guns! Can't take mine out of the box at the range without having to explain what it is, how old it is, why it looks like that...
Everybody loves 'em!
And then, I have to explain the differences between the "Space Gun" and the 106 and Victor models. Maybe 45 minutes later I can start to shoot!

You oughta get an XP-100, just to pull out after the High
Standards...:D

When my father had passed I inherited a High Standard. I had several FTFs. I found out that this was a magazine issue. At the time, I needed money and sold it cheap..wish I still had it. Young and dumb! I remember seeing the Gyrojets for sale in the back of the Shotgun News back in the early 90s. My buddy had an FFL and we bought a lot of guns to play with. We talked about a Gyrojet...popular from James Bond..but never ordered one.

"Space Guns" , huh? The league I shot in in Washington, DC, in the 70's, we called 'em "The fluted barrel with the Buck Rogers muzzle brake" and I did want one, but I had just bought a Supermatic Trophy(5" bull bbl.) and a Tournament (6" "skinny" bbl.) model for $110 each and one more was more than my budget would bear.

Oh, but I DID lust after one - an old retired USArmy Major had one and he let me shoot it one match - raised my raw score from avg 275 to 285, if I recall.

The gun club I belonged to in the early 70s had a small group of guys that shot Bullseye. Most shot S&W 41s. One shot a Shockey tuned Ruger MkI and a 41 with an extendable front sight. Being a young guy with a wife and new baby I couldn't swing the cost of a 41. I did however find a High Standard Supermatic Trophy with the 7 1/4" fluted barrel at Southwest Shooters Supply in OKC for $160. Never could beat the guy with the Shockey Ruger but was competitive with the other guys. Still have it and shoot it occasionally.

When i was just a kid, I had an uncle who strapped a High Standard to his tractor with a handmade holster setup. He liked to potshot at running rabbits while working in the field. The object was to kick up dirt to move the rabbit along. While it was a camp pistol model, unlike the target models pictured, it was very accurate and was a lot of fun to shoot. Wish he and that pistol were still around.

Last Saturday I picked up an unfired NIB Supermatic Trophy with 7 1/4" fluted barrel made in 1983...It's probably going to make someone a great shooter, but it'll be on my table at the next gun show as tradebait for someone's nice S&W wheelgun...:D...Ben

Back in the day when on the PD, we were issued "chits" for overtime, instead of money in the paycheck. They could be used to get days off or traded to other Officers if you wanted too.
One of the guys had a HS Supermatic Throphy with fluted barrel and gold washed trigger he wanted to get rid of. I traded him some overtime chits for the gun, kept it, and shot it for several years, but eventually traded or sold it off.:(

The Ruger I shot was not mine - it belonged to Uncle Sam, and I checked it out from the post arms room. It was the Mk I, and had the 6 7/8" barrel. It had the U.S. Property markings, and if you find one today, it would be quite valuable.

The gun was quite stock - no custom work. I have no idea what the gun the captain was shooting cost him - I just knew I was not in the same league to buy one.

This one I own today is a duplicate of the same vintage (without the U.S. markings).

This is the Ruger Mk I bull-barreled type, vintage of 1965, that I shot when I was in the National Guard and as a civilian. I did some trigger work on it, and it still has the best trigger of any .22 target gun I own.

John

I have a Ruger Government Model. Very accurate, but barrel heavy.

Here's a Colt Woodsman space gun that I picked up years ago. There are no stampings on the rib, comp or sight. Looked like something King might have built. I built the elephant grips and did the drawing.

Unfortunately I don't have the pistol with me but here are the old photos. The muzzlebreak unscrews so it can be cleaned. The goofy mag release was a homemade thing as it had a set of equally too large homemade grips on it.

Great post, I'd need seen ones that look quite like the ones in the first post. Love that space gun look. Would make a great Star Wars gun.

Here's my Spacegun I bought last year. Great Target Pistols.
The thing I like about the HS weights is that they have a selection and you can position the weight at any place along the barrel to have the weight where you need it.
