First time I went to Georgia I had to ask a local for directions. After giving
me the directions in great detail he ended by saying "it's a fur piece".

NEVER EVER. It taste funky. Had it like that once. Spit it out. I use regular oil for best taste.

Hummm, only to someone ignorant of history and geography. Virginia had the Most CW battles and the Capital of the Confederacy was there.
Years ago someone asked my Grandmother who were the new people that moved into her tiny town. She replied that they were foreigners. They were from a town that was only 50 miles from her. (This was in Finger, TN)

My great grandparents were both born in mid 1800s, both passed when I was 5 so only distant memories. During that time period in most rural areas of the US one only knew folks living within a few miles of their homes. My grandparents also married within their neighborhood but by turn of the century travel was the norm. They moved from Western N.C. to Detroit then to Ky and finally to Asheville.

Then the person cooking it must have used old / burnt oil . Peanut oil is actually known for having a mild to neutral flavor .

Peanut oil has a relatively neutral flavor and a high smoke Point.
Combine that with relatively low price and good availability, lots of folks use it.
An oil that might be more Southern is Cottonseed Oil. Squeezed from the cottonseed after it’s extracted from the cotton fiber during the Ginning process.
The remaining solids called Cottonseed Meal is used for animal feed and sometimes fertilizer. It contains a lot of Protein.
