Thinkin' about getting a Maine Coon Cat, nyone have one ???

I've always been a cat person, had cats all my life, discovered Bengal cats a few years back, now I won't have anything else. Not only are they stunning, they are the best companions going. They see you off in the morning, greet you on your return, love playing fetch, and even like water. I heartily recommend checking them out!

A Maine Coon is a great cat. We had to put our dog down just before we got the cat and I swear he's the reincarnate of the dog. The cat will actually come running when I whistle for him. They are big, furry and have a wonderful personality. Very vocal and if they want something they'll tell you over and over and just pestor you. Maine Coons are the 1st real American bred cats having evolved in that state. Hense the fur and big paws for moving in the snow. One theory says that they are decendents of the Norwegian Forest Cat having sailed here with the Vikings.

I had one for a few years, that we got from a rescue shelter. Great cats, and strong, as others have mentioned. It could jump from the ground up into a window sill, that was 6 foot, 2 inches. It would jump up and knock birds out of the air. She was amazing at jumping, it is hard to believe, until you stand and watch the animal do it. She was a good cat. Mikey

My daughter, Michaela, is named for my childhood Maine Coon cat, Michael. He was special, but now I've become a "dog" man because of my Lhasa Apso, Samantha.

Maine Coon is a fine animal! My favorite is the Manx. They act more like dogs...come when called, follow you around, relatively quiet, good guard cats, etc.

Shoo, Good Luck with the Coon endeavour! I always said you had a little.... luck....;)

This guy came around my house looking for a home. I took him in. I think he was a Maine Coon. I do know he was big, gentle, very affectionate, and had long, thick fur. I had him for quite some time, but unfortunately we always seem to outlive our pets.

I have one that was abandoned near a relatives house, she was a bit standoffish at first.

I don't know who told you these cats are laid back , she is wound as tight as a $2 watch , can't ever seem to relax...

She had been with us about 3 years when we decided she needed a friend..

Best thing we ever did , the are the best of friends and teach each other things, like how to get some treats. She taught the dog how to relax , now they sleep on their back together :p
Really she's a great cat, she always talks to me and has me trained to talk back, she has the most eeeerie haunting sound when the wife takes the dog out without her after work. Very friendly and social, very smart. Will come when she is called (and most likely when the dog is called) and loves to play.

We have two brothers, Eric and Yancey. Eric is grey and 20 lbs. Yancey is orange and about 17 lbs. They came from the woods as kittens from a feral mother.

Best two cats I've ever had--and I've had a bunch.

We had a Maine Coon Cat, Velvet, who lived to be 17 years old. She was a great cat, beautiful long grey coat, and loving. We also have a DLH, Rosie, orange and white who's 2 years old. Present weight is 22 lbs. Less than a year ago, we got a DSH grey and white, Willow, who was 4 months old. She's full of it, as most kittens are. She'll want to wrestle with our big guy, he'll put up with it for a few minutes, then just grab her and throw her down. The don't hurt each other and have a great time playing. (He outweighs her by about 18 lbs.)

And the DLH (Rosie) and DSH (Willow.) (We got Rosie from our son when he was about 4 months old. They thought he was a girl and took him in to be spayed. The vet looked and said, "uh,uh. Rosie's a boy!" So it was neuter rather then spay. Son said, "It's short for Roosevelt." :). But he got too rambunctious for them; after the Christmas tree came down, our son asked if we wanted him. We took him in a second and he's been great.

Both get along great with our Sheltie, Erika.

thats a dead ringer for one of my old coons ... Spook (dangerously close to racist without back story)
he was names so for his color and stalking skills which allowed him to vanish and teleport at will.
these are very intelligent creatures. Sometimes at night I'd wake to scratching at my bedroom window... grab the light for a look see and then you'd see those eyes glowing back at you while the rest of him remained woven into the fabric of the night.
that was old Spook tellin ya he wanted inside to keep your feet warm.

such fond memories .... I just had to gather a few pics.
Heres lookin at Spook kids:D

They have a sense of humor, dont let anyone tell you any different:D
You should have heard my lady when Spook dropped by to say hi.

Heres what I mean about cat scans being a service they provide, Im sure shoo will love this addition to his QC department.

Its been mentioned that they are gentile giants.
this cannot possibly be overstated.
their capacity for love is beyond comprehension. After all their pranks, antics, pestering, playing, gifts of dead things and ankle ambushes ... at the end of the day ... that thing at the core of this breed will put him at your feet with that crazy tail and a sense of purpose to keep the frost off your toes while standing guard.

We have 2. Both are rescued. I love them and they give love back too.

Mr. Bigs is about 29 lbs. loves to hang out in the gunroom. He is a N frame cat.

Melany is only about 22 pounds. She helps out with the mooning and demooning chores.

This is Mr. Bigs with one of the regular size kitty's. My daughter brings them home and then finds them a permanent home. One year she placed 14!

You guys are killin' me !!! I want one bad, wife said no more things that have to go to the vet or poop or eat in the house....we'll see. Shoo
P.S. Love the cat on the lathe !!!

Only Maine Coon Cat I have known lives with my brother. He was a foundling. He has been a strictly indoors cat, has developed diabetes, whether that was due to his lifestyle I don't know.

Can't go wrong with a Maine Coon. I had one for years, intelligent, loving, and beautiful.

If he got mad at us he would go to the door, grab the doorknob with his front paws and try to open it. He was depriving us of his presence.

I've had many cats, but the one i miss the most is the Maine Coon.

Lost our Maine Coon a few years ago, probably to coyotes. Looked a lot like the one Pops2 posted. Definitely good sized cats, and full of character. Ours was nicknamed Worthless-he could make Garfield look busy.

Thinkin' about getting a Maine Coon Cat, anyone have one ???

Well, kinda. The wifey and daughter just happened to be at the pet store on "bring in your kittens for adoption day". Everyone was interested in the little kittens but no one was paying attention to the older one (about 5 months) in the next cage. So they brought him home and named him Oliver. Our other two cats, which are litter mates, finally accepted him after a couple days.
I must say Oliver is a pretty neat cat and very different from the other two. Vet said he is likely part Main Coon and he does have a slight heart murmer which is common with Coons. He's quite clever and seems to enjoy opening drawers and cabinet doors. He's also a mooch, food can't be left unattended which is a PITA. Unlike a small dog where you can set your sandwich on the counter and go do something, the counter isn't safe with a cat. I once left bacon frying in the pan to get my shoes in the next room. I returned to see Ollie standing over a strip of bacon on the floor! He can also open the bi-fold doors and pop open the Rubbermaid cat food container, so we have to set a heavy box on top of that now. Unlike our other cats Ollie likes to lay on his back a lot. In fact he usually sleeps on his back between the wife and I.
If I were looking for a cat I would try to find another one like him!
