Thinking about collecting coins...

Do not plan on buying any thing from the mint, I had planed on the 2021 peace and morgan silver dollars. I could not get in to the mint on the phone or the internet and when I did all the big dealers had bought them all and had them on ebay for 2-3 times what they were priced at from the mint. They had them on ebay 5 minutes after the mint opened the sale on them! Jeff

Ha, sounds like people buying M1 Garands and 1911's from the CMP.

Ah, coin collecting, since this a S&W forum first I'll compare it to S&W revolver collecting.
The revolvers that S&W no longer makes are of higher premium than their current ones. Could be pre-lock vs lock, ones that not many were made of, condition of used vs pristine with original box. Many variables determine the value.
Coins vs bullion. It's nice to have some bullion, as 1oz silver rounds, but they're continuously making more and more of those. 1oz silver eagles, again more and more are being produced. There's a lot of silver in the world.
US coins that were made for use as general public money, there'll never be any more of those made. Morgan dollars, Peace dollars, Liberty Walking halves are hot/in demand currently, doesn't mean they're a good investment, high mintage/too many of them. Invest in coins that there weren't many made of, low mintage, and the best possible condition you can afford. The rarer high condition coins have been going up in price while more common lower grade coins have stagnated.
Go to a coin show in your area and see/learn.
Silver bullion is good to have some, common high mintage silver coins are good to have some but the price escalation occurs with the rare stuff.

Plant some European Walnut trees, English, Circassian, Turkish or whatever variety, but Juglans Regina. Leave it to the great great great grand kids. They will love you!

Gold and silver is constantly being mined and refined. Good walnut is a blessing! Avoid American Black Walnut, Juglans Nigra, it is a very poor substitute.

Again, thank you so much for all these responses. Many made me feel stupid since I misunderstood the concept of raising in value vs. being immune to inflation :o I always thought gold and silver are going up over time, when in all reality they are somewhat immune to the ups and downs in the market.

I collect vintage Weatherby stuff as a hobby, I collect (or rather accumulate) books incl. old books for education and entertainment.

I won't start collecting coins because I need a new hobby and/or have too much money laying around. I'm only considering it if there is a gain somewhere, like old rare coins, limited availability, etc. you name it.

But it appears that I will probably buy the dip and ride out the stock market, because it's true, the market will recover.... sooner or later.

One time went over to Dude’s house in Vegas to see some Rifle Stocks.
He made stocks and had exotic wood from all over.
So I ask, what kind of tree is that out front?
American Black Walnut.
The experts might tell you it won’t grow here, but mine is!

Thank y'all for the replies and messages, I do appreciate it :)

William Devane is back after a long absence.

Actually, I haven't seen him lately.... especially not in the NRA magazines.

I am 82.5 years old and I can remember in 1964 when LBJ said "there will be no need hoard these silver coins we will always have them" they were gone in a couple of months. Jeff

What coins was he referring to?

Probably talking about this. Up through the 1964 Coins- Dimes, Quarters, Halves, they are 90% Silver.
Nowadays the 90% is very desirable, you usually pay a pretty high premium to get it.
It’s called Constitutional Silver and sometimes Junk Silver.
I hate the term Junk Silver!
‘On July 23, 1965, President Johnson approved the Coinage Act of 1965, which removed silver from circulating coins and authorized that clad coins be used for the half dollar, quarter, and dime.’
