Obviously this is one of the few things that even start to set the rules and a guide for "Stopping power"............... 45 Antelope
50 Deer
100 Black Bear (To account for 350- 500 lbs. bear.)
120 Elk, Moose, Kudu, Zebra, Large African Safari Plains Game
150 Lion, Leopard, Grizzly Bear, Brown Bear
250 Hippopotamus , Rhinoceros, Cape Buffalo, Elephant . Has anyone else ever heard of Thornily?

This was a chart developed by a guy named Peter Thornily to create a range of what it is needed to harvest these types of game. Anyone have any idea? I don't lol.

Thanks for posting the chart. Hmm, in real life all the "stopping power equations" are just theory. This chart goes into detail on the loads, but the guns? The "JEDI" (? Star Wars) chart gives theoretical "energy transfer"data, which means little as far as "stopping power"...

But a lot of work went into the math to produce that chart...

The chart means almost zero when talking expanding bullets. Stopping power doesn't really exist in conventional pistol & rifle rds. Everything has failed.

What does "recoil range" have to do with any "stopping power" chart?

These things have been around for over 100 years and are only good for selling ammunition and firearms that people wouldn't normally buy otherwise. I don't see any difference between this one and the others except it makes less sense.

There are many "calculators online. They are worth what you pay for them. Useless.

Is shot placement or penetration mention? NO

The Pondero Taylor formula for Knockdown power was Bullet weight in grains X Velocity in fps. X Bullet Diameter in inches / 7000.

So a 480gr X 2100fps X .458"/7000 = 66.0 This is Taylor's number for my 450 Nitro Express (3.25") double rifle, 458 Win Mag is 68.7. It is a nice/easy way to compare similar rounds for dangerous game. Taylor said it was worthless for anything else! (He ought to know!)

Thanks for adding that Ivan. I have heard that term for many years. this one is different and by a respected authority at the time. For what I gather, he tested it out in field use, not in theory. I have shot the new FBI rounds and quite honestly, I am not impressed. Not at all. I do see how that equal boolits in different calibers can produce useful foot pounds of energy when comparing rounds and calibers. At my club, we have steel hanging targets at 50, 75 and 100 yards we shoot at what we call light up night. We use to do things differently, but it got so popular, we decided to the new guidelines. The lights come on, and the shooting begins. 5 minutes of practice and then the competition begins. Lasers, scopes, open sights. It is a shoot what ever handgun you want, in any "handgun" caliber you want. Guys shoot from 17Mach2 to 500 S&W. I am convinced that the noise/sound the plates make and the way they move once hit tells the story. You know for certain when the plates are hit, which caliber out powers which. This method does not leave much to the imagination. you can clearly tell the 9mm from the 357Sig, 357 Mag,40 S&W, 10mm, 45ACP, 44 Mag 454 Casull or 500 S&W and 460 S&W. Very telling indeed. Most guys use their most impressive rounds.

Groo here
Am starting to discount FBI spec and rounds made to match it.
They try to hit a specific mark not do the best ....

The 12 Ga. might have the highest energy but............

I don't like the idea of getting close to Dangerous animals
with a shotgun or even a Revolver if I can help it.

100 yard or more with a rifle makes me very happy, just in case
things turn to !~%$*&)!! .
