I cannot imagine any sworn officer actually issuing a summons for a driver "flashing his lights" regardless of the perceived (that's correct: perceived) purpose.

Coming from a family full of LEOs, elected and selected; That is "beneath the badge" in any state.

Here in Tn, Tennessee State Troopers have issued many tickets for flashing your headlights to warn others of them. They called it "Violation of light law"

As a former LEO, it did upset me a little that people were doing that at the time. Now since I'm on the City Council and speeding tickets are being discussed, I have advised our Chief that I would not be telling them how many speeding tickets to write or not to write.

It is as of now a hot topic at our City Board Meetings. I myself will be staying out of it.
I feel the officer must use common sense when it comes to speeding tickets.

If you don't like the guy flashing his lights to warn you about the cops ahead then keep your foot on the pedal and don't slow down. Interstates were designed for cruising speeds at 75 mph and that's what the speed limit used to be. It's got nothing to do with safety it's all about making more money!

I always appreciate it and return the favor when I can. Much love to those good folks who have saved me for a ticket.

Hey, I appreciate it also. So much so in fact that sometimes I will flash an oncoming vehicle that is obviously speeding, even though there is no speed trap ahead of them. It make 'em slow down and look............ Hope I don't get arrested for illegal headlight use.

You do realize, though, even if only charged with "illegal headlight use," you are entitled to a jury trial. Even if you are as guilty as heck. The most they can do is find you guilty. As if municipal judges want to miss their tee times, while you exercise your rights.

I guarantee, after a few of those, tickets won't be written on that charge any more.
