Thoughts On Pending AR Ban

You will not see another ban. The major difference is the Republicans control the House. The Democrats controlled both the Senate and House by large margins in 1994 and still had to compromise to get what they got.

Other major differences are that the majority of Americans now believe in the right of self defense and the right to own firearms. That was not so in 1994. In 1994, there were no "shall issue" states for concealed carry permits. Now that's the norm.

I seriously doubt that there will even be a magazine ban. Maybe "universal" background checks, but even that is not a slam dunk.

I think that is exactly the kind of thinking that resulted in the last ban. If you think it can`t or wont happen -you better think again. If your not writting letters to Reps and Senators you might be surprised at what can happen.

Ever since Columbine, every shooting incident in the U.S. is reported by the media. Doesn't matter anymore if it's a handgun or long gun. The media benefits when the weapon is an "assault weapon" just so they can print/say it. It conjures up the fear in the public and causes politicians to react to the public's demand to do something. Naturally, the easiest thing to do is creat a ban on certain weapons. Mind you, it's the crazies and criminals who give our sport a bad name but there's no mention by politicians on what to do with them.

I watched the senate hearings yesterday and listened as Sen Durbin told LaPierre that much more stringent backround checks would deter criminals from purchasing a gun. I don't know what he was smoking but criminals don't legally buy guns now. They buy them off the street or steal them from law abiding gun owners.

Sorry to ramble, just my .02

My turn to rant...

You know what they say... There are lies, damn lies, and statistics. :D

I was listening to the news this morning and they had a sound bite of a ER surgeon saying how there were 30K gun deaths in the US versus a few hundred in the UK last year. But there's no breakdown of the numbers.

How many were suicides? LE or self defense related? How many were gang related?

Where did these deaths occur? Were they evenly distributed across the country or concentrated in a few urban areas?

As for the universal background check, in yesterday's hearing they spouted off a big number of gun sales that were denied due to a failed background check claiming that this proves that it works. However, since the vast majority of these rejections did not result in prosecution of the buyer, who can say that they didn't just go out and buy a gun on the street to use in a crime?

And where's the breakdown of the reasons why these sales were rejected? How many of them were in fact violent criminals. Someone could have a felony DUI on their record, does that mean that that person was about to commit mass murder when they attempted to purchase a gun?

Who said that I'm not writing and calling?

I don't see the NRA logo by your name. Since December, I've purchased a life membership for my grandson and a yearly membership for my boss.

What are you doing?

I watched that Senate hearing yesterday and almost cringed everytime Lapierre spoke. Nothing personal, but he shouldn't be the voice of the NRA. They need a spokesman who's got some charisma and charm. He doesn't have either.

There is a story going around now about a woman who has lost 4 children due to gun violence..the media is really playing hard in this fact, what they are totally ignoring is the fact that is was in Chicago and it was all gang related. In fact the last son was a member of one of the more violent gangs in Chicago. As Bill said there are lies, damned lies and statistics and as long as the storyline fits the media's agenda it will be laid out. Now they are starting to pick and choose what part of the story they will tell. A lie of omission is still a lie!!!

As already stated, these politicians are too scared to vote for a ban. For example, every one of our representatives in Arkansas have come out opposing any gun ban. The same is true in many, many other states as well. Despite the politics being placed here and the liberal media hype this won't happen. I am just sick and tired of the knee jerk reaction of everyone going out and buying up all the ammo for absolutely little to no reason. All this is doing is driving up the prices of everything. It is making my casual weekly target shooting very expensive.

In Europe where there are gun bans, the suicide rates by gun have dropped but also climbed in other area's like jumping off buildings and bridges. Same for Japan where they are trying to get gun bans up. Never hear any anything about that either.

I would reply with my own opinion, but every time i speak about this topic my blood gets hot, my heart beats quicker and i see a mix of red and dark spots and occasionally foam at the mouth when politicians speak about it on television pretending they know every statistic they ever state is 100% fact and if you disagree, something is wrong with you.

So ill politely agree with the above.

The difference is that back in 1994 there were not as many firearms enthusiasts who owned some flavor of modern sporting rifle as there is now. There are more of us to resist and fight against additional gun control legislation. We have better communication and organization than back then.

The internet and social media have played a huge role in this. The internet was in its infancy in 94. We are now able to become more organized and pass information quickly

Sooner or later something will happen to fire up anti gun hysteria and the cycle will repeat itself. A spare parts stash is not a bad idea, I just got a DPMS spare parts kit that was on backorder from Midway. It has all of the springs, pins and detents, spare ejector, ejector pin, gas rings, firing pin, etc... and a few other odds and ends. I plan to pick up a spare bolt when they become available again.

Better to have and not need than need and not have...

The cat is out of the bag. OP, if you are worried about AR types
becoming extinct(no matter how old you are),I would not
worry. I lost count of how many M16/AR15s Colt has made
but if you consider how MANY mags are out here in private
hands already,it has got to be staggering! I would guess it
has to be close to 100 mil, this is ONE type of firearm,no ID
on mags, they will NEVER be accounted for, much less picked up. Pete

POST SCRIPT on feinstein,I have watched her for years(even before
I lived here) and she will get re-elected everytime with all the liberal,
wealthy, enviro wackos, and pot heads that call this place home. She
feels empowered introducing her siht but Democratic politicians that
REALLY have to WORK at getting elected don't want to touch this with
a 10' pole, because they no it will put them out of office.

I said "IF" your not.

And yes I am a member of the NRA and yes I do write and call my Senators and Congressmen/women.

Not sure why you took offense to that?

Do you know anyone that lives inher district that is out of work and can be talked into running against her? I am sure that a collection can be raised from the rest of the nation so we do not have to listen to her stupidity. Her fellow democrats would probably secretly be glad to see her go.

I live north of the three little PIGS, Barbra Boxer the clown, Nancy Piglinsky and the Queen of gun control Dianne Frankenstein, they are all liberal gods from San Francisco and will never be voted out of office, the only way to get rid of the rodents would be term limits or natural causes.:D

What concerns me more is the actions that may be taken by individual states. It's always been CA in the lead for crazy restrictive gun regulation. But with NY upping the ante I fear the worst when the new legislation is presented here in CA. :(

But you also have to remember the rest of us out here. The midwest,North,South... We ALL (for the most part) grew up around hunting, fishing and the great outdoors. Weapons are just about an everyday way of life from the time we grow up. A great deal of this is "saber rattling" and we'll end up where we were to begin with. WE are not the problem,it's the system and the people elected that aren't doing anything more than designing a better upper "welfare class" for themselves. Wish I could retire on $179,000 and have free health care for life and all the rest of their perks.
