The city electrical supervisor stopped by yesterday morning to ask if they could pull a bucket truck into my rental house yard, which is next door to me. They needed to trim a big white oak to get the limbs away from the power lines. I had no problem with it, and asked if they could take a couple of the biggers limbs off at the tree trunk, instead of just lopping smaller ones away from the lines. He agreed, and the deal was that they would chip everything that fit in the chipper, and I would take the rest so they didn't have to haul it off. Are you kidding? I'll get a bunch of firewood out of it, to burn or sell.

Anyway, the two tree guys came with their boom truck and worked all day, until they had to take the full truck to dump the chips before the landfill closed. They came back this morning to finish up this tree, but have a couple more in my yard to do.

Anyway, I went out about mid-morning to watch, and saw this (pics below). I'd seen similar work in places around town and wondered who had done it. It took him less than 30 minutes to carve the three heads and the heart. He's a smoker, and used cigarette ash to color the eyes and noses. This tree is only about 25 feet from the highway, no way you can miss seeing the art.

Any way I can get the first picture right side up?

I'm gonna go out on a limb....

Be careful if he's close by with a chain saw. :D

I imagine he could do some nice work on an ice block, but he stays busy with trees. He said he had a really small saw with teeth fine enough that he could cut teeth in the bear's mouth. I'm completely fine with the "coarser" version, the detailed stuff won't last as well as the wood ages.

I always wondered what hickok45's day job was.

Love the work. What amazes me is the fact that the City allows this creative guy an extra 1/2 hour on the job to leave his signature. We need more of this for the sake of humanity.
He spent less time on those heads than many city workers do taking breaks. He was finished with the trimming and all the brush that would go through the chipper was taken care of.

I called his boss this afternoon and gave the guy a big attaboy, not only for the creative work but how well he and his coworker trimmed the tree and cleaned up when they were done. His supervisor said he got a lot of calls like mine, and because of that, the city gives him a lot of latitude. It's good PR.

There are several “ faces” carved on trees on St. Simons Island Ga. One has to drive around to see them unless you get a map of their loactions. Not bears but some kind of elf?
