Time for another Derringer thread discussing what else? Derringers of course!

Back in my cop days, my usual armament was a 5" 1911 .45, built on an aluminum frame, a 2" .38 special nickel Colt Cobra, carried in an ankle holster and a 1" .22 magnum NAA revolver in my left pocket. I also carried a few knives.

And yes, I DID work in a rough city. :D

HA HA. Me too.

Except it was a Model 66 on the belt, a Model 60 on the ankle, and a NAA in 22 magnum in a uniform pocket.

My ex wife sewed the pocket itself into a mini holster for the Mini. That was about the only thing she was good for. Got rid of her, but I haven't been without a mini of one form or another since. 🙂

Currently it's a 22 magnum PUG. This one, with XS Sights, is surprisingly accurate, and more than "minute of head" out to 15 yards plus. A lot of fun walking a soda can across a field.

I've got a few too. Yes, much better choices for self defense...but these are still fun to mess with.

Bond Arms Snake Slayer IV 45LC/.410
With barrels for 44 Special and 357 MAG.

I loaded up some "Flamethrower" rounds - slow burning powder makes for an impressive fireball at dusk. I've got some video that needs to be edited and posted sometime.

I picked up a Bond Rowdy 410/45 in early april for 268 dollars locally no haggling needed . Doubt it will ever be used but it might come in handy one day for something !!

Nice score! By all means, learn the trigger pull on the Bond. It can be frustrating and was for me, until I read how to hold the gun a smidge lower in the hand, not crowding the cocked hammer. World of difference. Good luck with yours! :)

I didn't know you could haggle at Academy. I thought their prices were fixed.

Guns can still be fun! I’m pretty certain Miami has his bases covered on socially suitable pistols given his horde of heaters.

Knew a few cops who had those little 22 NAA revolvers stashed somewhere on their person. I was told they weren’t back up guns but “hide out” guns. Specifically if you got held hostage by some felons as did happen to some officers before my time.

We had an ex con on a traffic stop who really wanted a cigarette bad. Turned out he’d stashed a 22 NAA stashed in his box of Camels. Anyone who has watched Trooper Coates video knows these miniature toys can kill.

I’ve never owned a derringer and probably never will. If I did I’d love a High Standard for no other reason than I think they look cool. Rock n Roll Hootchie Coo!

You always can... price matching, display model nicks, etc... Mine was the display model so I told the manager to take of 5%, he agreed. Afterwards, at the register, they then stacked on the 10% mil/le discount they're running until July.

Bass Pro Shops and Academy had it for the same exact price of $269.99. At Bass Pro, I had $20 in points and they automatically give a 5% discount to veterans and law enforcement. I still would have paid more at Bass Pro and had to use my points. 15% off the price is a better option. So, I kept my points, and got my gun at a cheaper price at Academy.

I have owned 2 derringers in my life. Both "Davis" and cost $36 (FFL cost) in .22 mag and .32 acp. I kept the .22mag much longer than the more effective .32. Only gun I could put in a dress shirt pocket with a couple pens. It went away when said shirt pocket became the "cell phone receptacle" at the turn of the century. Joe

Used the way they were intended for-arms length or card table distance-they are effective. A 19th Century of Charlie Asklins" belly gun.

I would never consider one of those hand cannon derringers. I have a NAA small 22mag that I have had since the early 80's. 72.00 I think. Certainly a close range piece, but nothing I would want to stand in front of

Re- NAA revolvers being drop-safe: They have a firing pin recess in the cylinder mid point between the chambers, and if you're doing it right there won't be an issue. Just rotate the cylinder to the recess point and lower the hammer. Works like a charm.

When I was with Dallas PD in the 70s and 80s carried a HS DA .22 Magnum everyday at work. Was clipped to the soft body armor under the left arm...it was a third stringer to the primary belt gun and the #2 S&W Model 42 on the left calf...Retired the HS as a backup gun after KelTec came out with the P32...finer deep cover gun can't be had...

Was a dealer at the time and sold a lot of American Derringers...met and had lunch with the owner once. He died some time ago and his wife had taken over the business...saw her at the SHOT Show several years ago...

Sold several of the COP 4-barrel derringers...neat but HEAVY and bulky...

As to the Mini-Revolvers...it's all in the grip... Was just shooting my NAA Black Widow yesterday with the LR cylinder. At 7 yards had about a 2" group...hit two 6" steel plates at 20 yards with two shots... The grips on the BW and Mini-Master along with the mini-Novak style sights makes the guns very shootable... Had several of the standard .22 LR and Magnum guns pictured above and would never bother with them again...

5-10-25 yards slow fire on each target. The plate was 15 rounds rapid fire with the BW at 25 yards, 14 hits, one just out at 1:00 o'clock... The 5 holes under the MiniMaster were it's 25 yard shots... Both guns shooting Winchester SUPER-X .22 Magnum JHPs..

Boy,, I guess none of You guys have watched Paladin down a bad guy with his derringer. He never misses. Oh, I have a NAA 22mag/22lr mini revolver with both cylinders. Walking the dog gun. The 22 mag shoots right on @ 7-10 yards.

As I recall, John Wayne in The Shootist carried a derringer, also.

The bottom line on derringers is really simple - nobody likes to get shot with anything. So those who choose to carry derringers still have a gun when needed.

My walking the dog gun is a J-frame. I used to carry the NAA in the picture in my post above but I just felt like I needed something more and something easier to handle. M649 does the trick. My High Standard robe pocket gun discussed above will either end a fight or give me time to get to something larger. In my house they're everwhar!

I remember my mom and grandma calling them "dick tracy guns". Guess he carried one back in the day??
