To Re-Load or Not???

Said that in jest but I understand. It's really hard to buy SD 5.56 ammo and expensive as well. As a price compromise I'm considering buying 500 rounds of freedom munitions 62 grain PSP ammo. Maybe not the most accurate but I'm sure it will do fine to 100 yards. Anything in the house is hot JHP 9mm and .357 Winchester Ranger and Federal to be specific. Or my shotgun with #1 buckshot. :)

How hot does your barrel get when you are shooting your reloads for accuracy testing ? I concentrate on each shot so I shoot slow and my barrel only get warm, not hot. After about each 20 rounds I will sit back and relax for about 5 or 10 minutes and shoot another 20 rounds. Just curious about how you guys go about shooting groups to test accuracy ?

I shoot slow and steady pausing between shots to record round speeds so my barrel only gets warm not hot.

That's the plan! I just need to slow my roll on spending. Fiscal cliff ahead!! Haha

My new addiction is killing me. So far my little sporty ammo and goodies has me $1400 poor!! If I don't slow down I will need my rifle to hunt food AS I LIVE IN THE WOODS. Lmao

The good news is all I need to save for now is my ACOG then reloading gear.

Tell me about it. I haven't even shot my M&P 15OR as it's now wrapped and under the tree and my wife has already agreed to let me make a trip to the CMP South Store to pick up a M1 Garand. At this point I'll be begging for reloading equipment come June/July for Father's Day/Birthday/Anniversary. That's my hope anyway. Then I'll probably have to wait to get powder etc.. for Christmas!

I have started working up some loads for the .308 win's I just received from BuffaloHunter60. Now I am remembering how hard it is to find a good starting point, especially when deer season is in full swing. I have them sighted in with Freedom Munition 150gr FMJ new but I have better bullets, I also have a choice between IMR4895 and CFE223 that I like. Plus I have a couple of triggers to polish up for people in the forum. To many choices on the bullets. I do want to find someone with the Nosler Reloading Manual, I am starting to use a lot of Nosler products and am going to have to break down and buy a book. LOL, I sure like having you guys around to ask questions of, I feel like we have all learned so much together.

Some fourty years ago, I bought a Lee Hand Press and Kit to reload .38 Spcl. cartridges (I think I paid around $17.00 for everything). Over the years my 'operation' had grown to include 26 different calibers. I used to have a 10'x12' room in the basement, a long bench and 3 presses took up one wall. A large storage cabinet was taken up by reloading 'stuff'.
Now I live in a 2 room flat and have to do my reloading at the kitchen table. (I load .45 ACP, .38 Sp/.357 Mag, .222 Rem & .260 Rem.) The press I use today is that same Lee Hand Press! With the exception of press, dies, bullets and powder, I could fit everything else in a couple of shoe boxes. A good single stage press and quality dies will make all of the ammo you would ever need... unless you are stocking up for WWIII or TEOTWAWKI!

Ordered a sport but do not know if it will make it here before I leave for NZ...anyway..I ran across a stag varminter so I snagged that just in case. Love the trigger...nice two stage...very smooth. I mounted a Burris 4.5-14 X 50 on it and hopefully...if the weather cooperates I will get to punch some paper tomorrow...raining right now buy the range is three steps out the back door so hopefully. All I have for ammo right this minute is hurters and some federal 55 grain...so will be fun to see what it can do. LOL or...see what I can do. I am looking at a hornardy progressive press...can get one for about $400...anyone familar with it?

nice rifle John :D
I have read about the progresive press, they say that once you get it set up it will run like a charm. From what I understand Patience and meticulous attention to detail are what it takes and it will crank out a lot o bullets. I myself think a person should keep a single or turret press for small load and building test batches, that is just my way of thinking. :D

I think I should pay YOU to reload for me! .....be cheaper than buying ammo. Hahaha

This was my first target using Herters 55 grain steel case...very dissapointing...failed to feed 5 out of twenty times 3" dot at 115 yards.
3-2.jpg

This was my second target using Fed XM193BK ammo 1" dot at 115 yards
4-2.jpg

Third target 1" dot at 115 yards....Federal Remington .223 walmart 100 pack.
5-1.jpg

All ammo but the herters functioned perfectly. I felt I was shooting pretty good and I think I am going to have to reload to get the results I want (one ragged hole) The bulk ammo is ok, but not what I am looking for. The sport digested the herters ammo ok but same lousey shotgun patten....none of my rifles will group herters ammo...its cheap and I guess ya get what ya pay for. I may see if I can find some match ammo and give that a try but I see so many good results here using dialed reloads that I have to go in that direction...Grover, you may be right...I might be better off with a single stage press...thats what I always used to use and I loaded thousands of rounds with it. For testing batches, it would be the way to go. I am going to get some of the bullets that are working well for the guys here and then probably go with H335 powder......I want something that gives good accuracy and consistency through the powder measure. I will not get to reload until I get back from NZ...next may but did enjoy shooting this morning....now time to try the windham and see what that does. LOL Do you use the press to seat primers or use a hand tool? Wonder what everyones preference is on that?

I just found a free online reloading source for more information;
Reloading Data - Nosler
anyone can go to it and get data for the nosler bullets they are loading instead of just looking and saying oh this one is kinda like it. LOL

its whatever a person wants to do, I am not at present using H335 but I know someone who is and I am pretty sure he would share his recipes with us. I am still working on the CFE223 but from what I understand the H335 and the Win748 are less temperature sensitive for those who live in the Snow Belt area.

AS far as primers, I am using an RCBS universal hand primer, I could get a ram prime but I dont kneed it. If I were to set up to sell reloads to you all I would mount my Single Stage back on my bench. Instead of the hand press I am using at the moment. I use my Lee Perfect Powder Measure to drop my loads but still individually test every load on my digital scale :D

Not all digital powder scales are created equal. The cheaper one I bought just died so now im getting one from Hornaday :D

Todays shooting

I shot these today at 100 yds with my Sport. All were with H335 and 5 shot groups except for one 10 shot group with Hornady 55 gr soft points. I still have to figure out the 55 gr FMJBT's and the 53 gr Vmax. what are you guys using for them in your Sport ?

Thank you GMC man, I am still working on the 53 gr Vmax and the 55 gr FMJBT. Anyone have any advice on loading those two ?

your favorite powder ?

I have only used H335 for loading for my Sport and would like to try something else.
I like H335 because I have very accurate loads worked up for it, it seems to be a clean powder with no temperature effects. What about Varget or CFE223 ? What are you guys using and why do you like it ?
