After the L.A. bank robbery shootout many dept's decided to add rifles to the list of items authorized. Many decided that an officer without a rifle was just a target.Joesmith357, no problem. In the not-to-distant future patrol rifles will probably be as common as sidearms. I read your original post about your surprise at the number of agencies who now utilize patrol rifles, and i'm sure you're not the only one shocked by the common use today of rifles in law enforcement, it's just not one of those things that makes the news....but they are here to stay, at least until replaced by some futuristic ray gun type (read phaser) weapon.....
