Took a couple of Springfield Rifles to the Range

Never paid more than $400.00 for one except the original M1A1's

Here is mine I've had since the late 70s. It is a Springfield, I think from1945. The short bayonet is a Union Fork & Hoe and the long one is an Oneida.

Be careful with these rifles. First you start innocently enjoying the rifle for a casual shoot. Them you stumble into another one you really like. After a while they start breeding like bunnies. Then you want to really stretch your legs and end up with something like this. Tony Ben built with some parts I had gathered. Test fired it yesterday and it shoot 1/2" groups with Federal GMM. I'm going to work steel to 1000 with it. It all started with a SOCOM the first year they made them. Enjoy.

I can hang with the best of them. Unfortunately (or fortunately) they multiply and I have more as this is an old picture. I just love them and can never fill my hunger.

I have owned 5 of each M1 Garand and M1a. Love shooting them both. I currently have amy WW2 service grade garand from CMP and a Springfield Armory National Match, from when they were still converting CMP guns. Likewise I retained a Standard grade and a Supermatch M1a.
I will have them till i go to that great range in the hereafter, then the kids can split them up.

Have a friend that he and I went to the CMP North Store at least every year. Some times he went with his Brother-In-Law. He now owns 30 M1 Garands (also 32 M1 Carbines). We try to shoot several every time I go to his house.

All I can say is take your self and any kids or grandkids that are old enough, or a buddy, to a local CMP service rifle match. The one I go to is pretty low key and only takes an hour (not including setup and packing out). If the range has electronic scoring then its going to be that much easier.

Completed my folding Tanker build (last pic in post #19) with a Burris 2x20mm scout scope. Too bad, the Leupold 2.5x28 was discontinued - but this one shall do.

The collection has grown since then, so yeah addiction to M1's is a problem! There are many Springfields in this group, all 4 manufacturers are here. There is an unissued M1 with the original factory protective coatings, and foil wrap intact.

Go to the range and uncase a M1 Garand and strong men weep and applaud with respect...beautiful women throw themselves at your feet...and the enemies of America cower in fear and run.

Just looked at the CMP website. It seems that are down to selling "Reclaimed" Garands. Built from old and new parts and have started manufacturing their own. Looks like they are shifting the original Garands to the auction site. Guess the party is close to being over............

I too thought this was on M1903s when I read the title.
30 +/- years ago I picked up a SC M1903A3.
Well a few years ago I went down the rabbit hole of Springfield's.
Now I have 11 M1903s, M1903A1s, M1903A3s and M1903A4s of various manufacturers but most are SA.

They do share the safe with both a 1945 SA M1 Garand and a early 90s M1A.

I still have an Arlington Ordinance Tanker in .308. I put a synthetic stock on it a scout scope a muzzle brake and a Ching style sling. It was my patrol rifle , and hunting rifle and will be the last to leave.

This is not to mention a half dozen M1903's, A3's and a couple of M1903A4's with scopes. He also have three M1917's and a couple of Krags. And enough bayonets to outfit all.

I just keep my bayonets in a small plastic trashcan with the handles sticking out the top.

I am down to just one Garand, although I have parts kits and receivers enough for a couple more builds. I kept the Winchester that I built from a stripped CMP reciever about 20 years ago. Good shooter too.

Is it un-American to tell you I actually prefer the M1903(A3) or 1917 to the Garand? As a lefty, it just doesn't catch on with me. And in all honesty even BoB can't get my fires to stay lit. I mean, it's a .30-06 rifle…beefy, and I'd rather have a carbine or Mini 14 for closer ranges- anything needing immediate follow-up can wait for a bolt to cycle. Which I'm oddly ok at even as a lefty shooting left handed

Edit: the original 1903 sights totally blow; I like the peep on the A3 and the 1917 and find them very similar to the Garand for use.

I feel like I just came out a bit on that. Vaguely nauseated, but the en bloc clip was a silly choice. Especially when detachable boxes were **already a thing**.
