Took my M-38 out frame cracked under barrel

Niiiiiiiice. Very cool. Did you have to send back your gun or was a picture good enough. I forgot. I should read the thread again. If a picture was good enough then you'd have a gun for parts too...

Looks like you had to send it back. I wonder what they do with all those parts. It would be nice if they sent you back the original gun too with those grips and everything.... Are they?

Called and then they sent FedEx label for return. Good customer service and fast turn around. Thank you SW. You can take grips off before you send it in. Kept my magnagrips to put on 638. They destroy failed firearm and put parts in trash bin.

Ah. At least you got the grips. :) I would think the cylinder would still be good and some of the internal parts would be nice to have for spares...

I'd even want the frame back so I could at least have the barrel too. But maybe I've got a bit of a hoarder. I just like the idea of spare parts for guns.

Spare parts are great, but don't ya think that when your gun is replaced free of charge... S&W keeps the old one ...

Picked up replacement the other day. Thankyou S-w customer service. It is well made with no machine marks and very good lock up and action. These are nice humpbacks!

I prefer revolver, too. The word has a little class to it, IMO, so I like to use it. ;)

Good that S&W fixed up our friend, even though with a gun that old they might have been justified in doing otherwise. A definite plus punkt for S&W! :)

Looking good! Just a warning, you may know this but if your just used to the old magnas on your j frame, those new rubber boot grips don't work overly well with speedloaders. It's too tight. I had to file mine down some. They do have a nice feel to them, even though they're small. But if you used to magnas, you might find these better.....

If,, in the end gun comes back, no replacement offered, can be broke down and every part (except the frame) sold on Ebay.

All handguns are pistols. Not all pistols are revolvers . . . ;)

Samuel Colt - HISTORY
Point taken.
At least it's not like having someone on the witness stand describing the gun and she says "It's shiny and has that round thingy that the bullets go in"

Off topic but yesterday I was purusing the evidence at a recently completed drug trial and amongst all the dope and illegal body armor there were two guns; a brand new Beretta Pico and a great condition 642. The prosecutor and I were admiring the guns ans she looked at me and said "Remember the good old days when we could get these released to us after the trial" She's my age, cute as a button, hard as nails but she carries a Ruger LCP instead of a Bodyguard 380. I've often told her that she is in the top 5 of my "next wife list"-even my wife likes her :D

Cajan... just a quick note...Body armor in not Illegal per the feds..its a state reg issue. I use to use it from time to time when flying overseas as a Civilian Contractor. I Do remember the days of allowing weapons from trials to be resold....DC Metro in 1981 had a Mauser 712 Machine pistol that was resold after trial to fund DC metro budget...it was a reg MG stolen, owner murdered in the BE of his home. Sold for a big pile of money even back then.

Those cracked ones I have seen have been M12s and M38s. I have not personally seen an alloy-framed Colt Agent or Cobra with a crack, but that doesn't mean there aren't any. I'd just prefer not take a risk on buying any alloy-frame revolver (S&W or Colt), even though those having cracked frames may be only a very small fraction of those made.

All handguns are handguns; some are revolvers and only those that chamber one round at a time are pistols like single shots and auto loaders.

The attachment on Colt history is just that, history including obsolete terms like pistol used for a revolver; holdover terminology from when handguns were only single shots. And even includes inconsistent terms of both "revolving handguns" and "revolving-cylinder pistol".

This Bodyguard has been shot 15 times a year with standard factory 158 loads. She is 98% condition. But upon cleaning I seen a crack under the barrel in the frame!! Ugh was a let down!!. I will call Smith Wesson tomorrow. And send it back. Hope they honor there product!!!! I am sure they will not fix it.They do not make them anymore. Pissed off for sure. My favorite house gun.

Have a look at my recent posts in this part of the forum under Ischia. Some of the same problems with my 37 and recently acquired model 38
