Hello Smith and Wesson fans. I am new to the forum and would like some help. I inherited a S&W top break 5 shot revolver and would like get some info on it. It is a double action revolver and on butt of gun is " RR 238953" No caliber is marked but i measured the diameter and it is a 38 in diameter but shorter so i am guessing 38 S&W. Dates on barrel are difficult to read due to wear. I know i can get a letter on the issue information on the gun from S&W but would like some info before i spend the money. Can you shoot modern loads in it. It appears to be in good but not great shape. Thanks a lot for the help!!!

Welcome to the Forum. A picture would be very helpful, since there are multiple models that fit that serial number range. It sounds like your gun has seen some serious use or a poor refinishing job to wear off most of the stampings, but it may still be a shooter. If it locks up tight and functions fine, you can use currently available 38 S&W ammo without problems.

These style guns, whether 32 or 38, hammer or hammerless do not command much money, so the letter will probably not add anything to the collectability of the gun, but it will give you specific details about the model, any unusual configuration in its manufacture and when & where it was shipped.
