There was a landslide today in Chaffee County. One of our posters, K.38 lives at the mouth of the canyon (Chalk Creek). It seems the recent rainfall caused a cliff to give away, bringing down rocks the size of cars. And under it was where the party of 6 was hiking. One little girl survived, 5 others perished.

It was of interest to me because my family went to the canyon for our summer vacation, and my son's wife wanted to hike up to the falls. I usually have better sense but when I saw it was only ".5" miles I agreed to go. Like a fool, I tried to keep up with his youngest. And of course it nearly killed me. I live at 537 feet above sea level. Even worse was the idea the trail heads up hill, then more. It gains 490 feet in 2500. I think that means its a 20% grade, and too much for me. I need more exercise.

Prayers for all involved, epically 13-year-old Gracie, she lost her parents and saw it happen and will have to live with that for the rest of her life. I hope she is a strong young lady.

Prayers from Texas for all affected by this terrible event. It shows the power of nature must always be respected.

What a tragedy for all concerned. My thoughts and prayers are with the families.

As for needing more exercise as you mentioned you need, count me in on that. Gravity is overtaking everything I got or had.

What a shame. My heart goes out to that young gal!

I just realized tonight where that trail is -- off the road that goes up to the St. Elmo ghost town. Back when we had our old motorhome, we camped at the last campground in from the highway.

The news said today Gracie is recovering but will need a lot of physical therapy. The banks in Buena Vista are taking donations to help her out. The branches here is Salida are taking donations also.

Her Dad is a hero who jumped in front of her to save her from getting hit. Another hero is the Deputy who went up into the rocks to look for victims. He is a stand up guy who has gone above and beyond the call of duty on other occasions also.

These two guys are true hero's.

God Bless the responders and may the victims rest in peace.

That is a horrible event. Seems like no place is safe...no matter where you are there is some kind of danger or some potential naturally occurring even to contend with. My prayers up for the family and friends of the victims.
