Most of my hunting these days is from the upper bedroom window. Due to local ordinances, neighbors, my wife .... I need to go about this quietly. And this clandestine endeavor requires one shot kills.

After years of fine tuning, I now have the equipment that can deliver the goods. My problem is that I am running out of that finely tuned load ... the Win CB short. I find them quieter and more accurate than their competition, and with the conical points filed flat for that SWC look, they work like sledge hammers on my little furry tailed rat friends.

I've never seen the Winchester CB Shorts,, but:

I use these in my Rifle's ~ Winchester CB Match Long ~ 770fps/29gr/lead round nose:

54058 - Ammo .22 Long Winchester Super-X Lead Round Nose 29 Grain 770 fps 50 Round Box

I also use the CCI LR 22 Quiets ~ 710fps/40gr/lead round nose:

3-0315837 - Ammo .22 Long Rifle CCI Quiet-22 40 Grain Lead Round Nose 710 fps 50 Round Box

Give'm a try,, if your guns can shoot the Long's or Long Rifle's.

If not,, CCI put's out the CCI CB Shorts or Longs ~ 710fps/29gr/Lead Round Nose. Haven't tried the Shorts,, but I find these in the Long Version too inconsistent.

What you really need is an Air-Rifle; using a firearm can get you in deep ****.

Well, at least one of the new air rifles with the built in noise suppression!

Traditional air rifles have a much sharper report than a .22 short CB. My RWS Model 36 sounds like a regular .22 short. Haven't been able to shoot anything around my place since a VERY nosy animal rights 'activist' (Momma's boy on SS disability!!) moved in next door.

I was using a browning auto in 22 short. Added a scope with one of the mounts that screw to the bbl and kinda hangs back over the receiver. It feels solid, but I was getting a lot of north south variation in the shots. I think it was the way I was holding the rifle to single load the CB. Putting some pressure on the scope in the process.

I had a brno #4 target rifle with 6x16 Variable Weaver just sitting there. so tried it out. It weighs 10 lbs with a great trigger. The rifling is set up for long rifle, but at my range, 10-15 yrds, it drills them pretty well. And the 28" bbl helps keep the noise down. I have some CCI CB shorts and CB longs and they are a bit louder than the Win.

I got really close neighbors, but they work and I don't. I am shooting nearly straight down into the ground. I am patient and chose my times and shots.

thanks for the advice. Still looking for Win CB shorts. I bought these 15yrs ago, so I am sure they are out production.

Sorry do not have any of those Winchester rounds but at the last gun show I picked up a box of 50 Aguila .22 Super Calibri rounds for $3.50.

I fired a few through my Ruger 77-22 and it was as loud as my spring activated airr rifle.
Word of caution , They advertise this ammo as being for handguns not rifles and you will want to check that the bullet left the barrel of a rifle to be safe after every shot.
Pain in the butt maybe but its safe and this stuff is the quietest .22ammo I have found.

The other rounds are obviously subsonic.

Thanks Engine49 for the info. I had forgotten that I have a box of the 20g calibri stuff. I fired a few rounds out of the browning, but accuracy was not up to what I was looking for.

I also wish the Win 22 short CBs were still available as they seemed
to be more accurate than other brands. I have tried the 22 Long CBs
but find them to be very inconsistant. I use the CCI Short CBs and they
serve my purpose. Some rifles group well with them, others don't. I live
in the country and don't have to worry about noise or close neighbors
but I still appreciate the light report and safety of the CBs. I use an
old Remington single shot that shoots to point of aim to pick bumble
bees off the purple violets and dandelions that dot my yard. Great fun.

I get excellent accuracy with the Super Colobri out of my 10/22. Have shot nearly a brick of them in the last few years. Very efficient on tree rats.

I've taken many of the nasty little varmints with these. The team: Stoeger X-20S in .22 and the Gamo Whisper in .177
Reliably one shot kills. The Gamo is equipped with laser and light for shooting in the attic when needed.

I was about to chime in and recommend the Aguila Super Colibri and the comments about handgun only got me thinking.

When I started using these about 10 years ago I didn't see that warning on the blue and silver box and used them in an old Stevens Visible Loader .22 pump without incident. I later bought a brick in different packaging (red and yellow) and noticed the warning on the box. Thinking they were two different products I used the red box stuff in a M17-3 and a Ruger Single Six with a 9- inch barrel (only 7 inches shorter than the pump), and stocked up on the blue boxes for the rifles.

Looking at both boxes, both are marked "Super Colibri" and claim 20gr bullets and no powder. The blue box rounds appear to have a slightly longer case and cover more of the bullet. They have different SKUs.

Both rounds weight 30.9 grains on my digital scale.

Somewhere in my murky memory I recall reading a claim that Aguila had two versions of this load, one with either more priming compound or a different formulation to suit it to use in rifles.

Midway's website lists both Colibri (375 fps) and Super Colibri (500 fps). The graphics show the blue and silver box for both. The Colibri has no restriction to handgun use, but cautions that it is for "training purposes only", while the Super Colibri has the restriction.

That the faster round would be more likely to lodge in a rifle barrel makes little sense to me, given identical bullet weight.

I have used both to good effect on red squirrels, but your mileage may vary.
