On Monday, in the "Random Photograph" thread, I posted photos of a sperm whale that washed up on the beach about ten miles north of here. It was the fourth beached whale I've seen and the biggest.

Well, a couple of days later, another whale washed up, about 200 yards from the first! This one is a small gray whale, about twelve feet long.

I know what some may be thinking, and no, this isn't some weird marine event. The sperm whale was killed by a ship's propeller, and they think the small one may have been stillborn.

And coincidentally, a third whale washed up on the beach in southern Oregon this week also. They suspect that one was killed by orcas.

An Orca pack kills by drowning. 6 or more will surround one when it blows then one jumps on it when it goes to inhale. They take turns going at it until It has drowned for lack of air. Then they eat, or some start to it it as soon as it is weakened and dying. I see no evidence of that on the last picture.

You are too far north, but a friend has wanted to file a suit preventing cleanup of beached whales in California. The claim is that it was traditional food for the endangered condors.

Sorry, I reread this and saw that the last pic may not be of the orca kill.

Conveniently close to the parking lot near the Peter Iredale.

Nice beach to walk on, but the air is likely a bit "ripe" by now ;)

I had forgotten how powerful that stench is, and when I walked on the down-wind side, I almost lost my lunch! I've seen and smelled them before- I should have known better!
