Although does not fit EXACTLY in the 1961-80 time bracket- Much like a hand grenade- close enough.

The top is my Grandfathers Model 15- by serial number (K 322XXX) it dates to 1958. It does not have the model number in the crane and lacks the top plate screw- so its either a very early "model" that had a mix of older/newer parts or a "pre number" that was at the very end. He was with the Denver Police Dept until 1967 and was his last duty weapon

The model 65 below, is a -3 and was purchased by me in 1986 when I signed on with the Logan County Sheriffs Office. Like most, I found the stock grips to small, but the Pachmayr most officers used too thick. So I went to a local gun shop and bought the used target grips you see, and they have been on there ever since. They actually dont interfere with speedloaders. We used .38+P SWCHP and Safariland loaders. They dont work with .357 out of HKS loaders very well though. I carried it until 1991 when I was convinced to move to California by my ex-wife....where I later signed on to the Riverside County Sherrifs untl 2006.

I happened to fly into Riverside on an Army mission several years prior to 2007 where I ran into three RSD guys in flight suits. One instructor and two students. I asked the older of the three if he knew my old Vietnam buddy, WW (first name Wayne) and he said yes, he did. WW was somewhat infamous in LA area law enforcement so I was not surprised he knew him. We exchanged a couple WW stories and the two younger SD helicopter students pilots were shocked. Stranger than fiction, but true.

Love your grand fathers 38 Combat Masterpiece.

It is a .38 Combat Masterpiece, not a Model 15. The model number doesn't show up on the .38 K target guns (K-38 Masterpiece and .38 Combat Masterpiece) until about serial number K352000. 1958 is about right for a ship year. The top sideplate screw was eliminated in 1956.

There is a Model 14 that shipped in July, 1958, at serial number K314496, but it was a special order unit and a one-off low number for a model marked gun.

I show a .38 Combat Masterpiece (not a Model 15) at K324087, so there is nothing unusual about your grandfather's revolver not having a model number.

It is cool that you have your grandfather's duty revolver. Cherish it.
