Ultimate police revolver ( Mod 58 )

I am wondering how the WW175gr Silvertip would do for defense.
I know it expands reliably in water filled 1/2 gal milk cartons. It takes 5 to stop it. It's pretty controlable too.

The Silvertip runs 1225-1250 fps and expands well... The Barnes, CorBon and Federal that use the Barnes all copper HP are doing in the low 1300s and are just as controllable. In talking to Peter Pi, owner of CorBon, he switched from his 170 Sierra JHC load to the Barnes bullet load to carry in his .41 for defense.

My dad was a armored car Brinks driver he moved lots of money. He always told me to get a 41 Magnum. He was right.

Yup. Too big for small hands. Too much recoil. Too heavy. Doomed from the start. Bill Jordan had it right. The K frame 357 was a police officer's dream.

Don't know what to do with mine. No purpose it can fill that isn't handled better by another gun. Paid $189 for it in 1989. Came with a duty holster and drop pouch and it was advertised as a police trade in. Shipped to Philly, but no idea what agency may have used it.

The 58 was really intended to be used by police with the ".41 Special" loading. Of course it didn't exist in a shorter case like the .38. A 210 grain bullet at 900-950 is a real pleasure to shoot in a 57. I've never owned a 58.

Jordan was one of the chief proponents of the .41 magnum.

He wrote later that he'd envisioned a true .41 frame and had been naive to think S&W would design an entirely new frame for a new cartridge.

Maybe they should've pitched it to Colt. I've seen Pythons that were converted to .41 magnum.

Skeeter Skelton also wrote that the original concept of the .41 magnum got severely mutated in S&Ws conference rooms that it became another .44 magnum. Sounds like the Elmer Keith influence.

Like many other models, I waited too long to finally get one. Bought a 58 from a member here a few years back, an 'S' prefix 1965 gun.
Very fond of it, and have hunted with it, taking one deer year before last.
I have large hands, so the Magna/T-grip combo is about perfect for me (and I like the looks)

They make a great woods gun.

I can't shoot too many guns with the Magna grips, especially the hard kickers. My 58 has Herrett "Jordan Trooper" stocks on it, as do several of my other guns, and they help tame the recoil a lot.

No, Elmer also wanted a true police load .41. The "Magnum" .41 load came out first and was bought by the police departments that issued the M58.

I think an L frame .41 Police would be a great gun.

...speaking of .41 Special...for those of you who reload, Starline just made a run of .41 Special... Mine was shipped yesterday... Going to use it mainly for my short cylinder .41 Magnums like the Taurus Tracker and Freedom Arms 97.

Sweet! Been wanting to try some for awhile in my 57 and 58. Any idea how it runs in .41 lever actions?

I think Muley is correct Elmer wrote about a .41 at the level that could be handled but would still have more swat than the .38 or even the .357.

There is a 41 special. Starline offers the 41 special brass.

Sounds like a new s&w night guard in 41 special?

Oh boy, my Wife got me a Lee 210gr .41 SWC TL mold for Christmas. I'ts going to have to get a bit warmer though, we've had temps below zero lately & the garage is kind of cool right now.

While I can appreciate the 41 Mag never saw the need for one probably due to the fact that there was no 41 special target load and that ammo cost was slightly higher with availability lower than .357 and 44 Mag .

Perhaps also based on the idea that .41 is fairly close to a .40 caliber projectile (10mm metric) and while .41 Mag can surpass 10mm in performance there appears to be quite a bit of overlap in performance between the two just as there is performance overlap between the .357 Mag and 10mm Auto.
Conclusion is that the .41 Mag really doesnt offer anything that my .44 Mag cant nearly duplicate and in reality modern .357 loads are PLENTY of power for urban use , will fire less punishing and cheaper .38 special at the range and are available in smaller L , K or J Magnum frames.

Need? What's need got to do with it? I buy guns because I WANT them.
I wanted a 657 with a 3" barrel so I bought one.
I'm going to add a Model 58 when I can, and maybe even a 57 too.
