December 17, 2024 – Ottawa, Canada

The Government of Canada will increase support to law enforcement agencies in detecting, intercepting and addressing fentanyl and precursor chemicals by adding artificial intelligence and imaging tools that will further help detect illegal drugs before they enter Canada.

As well, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) will train and deploy new canine teams to intercept illegal drugs. The agency currently has over 80 detector dog teams located at various ports of entry across Canada. CBSA will also deploy new chemical detection tools at high-risk ports of entry.

Health Canada will create a new Canadian Drug Profiling Centre to support 2,000 investigations a year, and expand capacity at regional labs.

By launching a new Chemical Precursor Risk Management Unit, Health Canada will be able to provide better insight into precursor chemicals and distribution channels, enhance monitoring and surveillance and enable timely law enforcement action.

In addition, Health Canada will accelerate the regulatory process for banning precursors so that border and law enforcement can take swift action to prevent their illegal importation and use.

Introducing significant new tools for law enforcement

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) will deploy a new Aerial Intelligence Task Force comprised of helicopters, drones, and mobile surveillance towers. Counter-drone technology will support RCMP officers and provide 24/7 surveillance between ports of entry.

So there is indeed a trade surplus with canada favoring canada, and trying to get around that FACT by using an average is more than misleading.

Sorry to be argumentative, but it is the importer who must pay tariffs in imported goods; it is their legal responsibility. What the importer and exporter decide on price is between them, but at the end of the day, it is the person who purchases the imported product who pays the higher price. Magical thinking doesn't reduce product costs.

Wow…… you either have to have the last word or you simply don’t understand. Yes the importer pays the tariff. But many times the exporter reduces the price of his commodities by the same amount. Therefore the cost to get it to market is the same and price does not change at retail level…… like buying a car. Dealer won’t go lower on price. But he gives you a little more on your trade. Then you save on sales tax and it’s exactly the discount you wanted. AGAIN its commerce 101. Just because you don’t understand it, doesn’t make it magical thinking. As to not being argumentative. That’s all you do. In every single thread you’ve ever commented on. Don’t think other members don’t notice this.

I'm not sure that I buy into the whole tariff scenario . Canada in particular is a strong ally of the USA . We share the longest undefended border in the world and it just doesn't make sense to me to be doing this to some of our long time friends and allies.
I'm not sure of the statistics but I can't imagine that much fentanyl is flowing from our northern border .
Also if fentanyl is flowing into our country ...which it is ... it's because there's such a demand for it .
We likely need to be looking after ourselves and cleaning up the issues we have here in our own country regarding illegal drug use first and not blaming our problems on our friends and neighbors...north or south.

Every appliance in my house says "Made in America." Except the compressor in my A/C as well as the coils and the blower motor are made in China. Same for the washer and dryer, motor, circuitry , sheet metal made in China. "Made in America" refrigerator compressor, icemaker and cabinet made in China.

Point is, quit whining. We passed what's good for "We, The People" right after WWI. The .gov currently eats up more than 20% of GDP just getting fat, rewarding "friends" and punishing "enemies." That's why the .gov hates the Mafia; we must pay "protection" so nothing bad happens and men with guns don't come to your house to take your stuff and kill you if you "resist." Joe
