Unexplained things/paranormal stuff….

... One thing I do know is that ridiculing someone for believing in them serves no good purpose.
Agreed. As I said in my initial post in this thread, I don't doubt the sincerity of those who believe in, or who have experienced, the paranormal. I just believe it is in their heads, in their imagination.

But, I also believe that reality for the individual is what he/she perceives it to be. People believe what they want to believe. Or, maybe that's too glib: People believe that reality is what they experience.

So far, not within my experience, so, as I said, I think the paranormal is not real.

But I ain't going looking either!;)

It's way beyond sincerity. I understand and respect your skepticism, I ask for the same for my experience. I don't - didn't ask for my experience. I have no explanation for what happened.
Religious people go with their kneejerk 'demon' version of beliefs. Joe Blow goes with skepticism. So do the PHDs I've queried. I don't blame them.
I trust my dog's instinct- reaction.

Hubby had an interesting sighting recently, while having dinner at my 96 year old Aunt Gloria's apartment in Brooklyn.
Hubby and my cousin Eric were seated at the far end of the dining room table, facing my aunt at the opposite end while she was speaking. Behind my aunt was the entry doorway to the room we were in, leading directly into the living room.
While Aunt Gloria was talking, hubby turned to Eric who was also facing Gloria and the direction of the doorway and said "Did you see that?"
Hubby said he saw "Something" in the living room but Eric said that without wearing his glasses, he couldn't see anything out there.
Hubby told us he clearly saw a very tall translucent grey figure move across the living room, from the kitchen to the bedroom. It size and shape was similar to the robot Gort, from the movie "The day the earth stood still".
Surprisingly, my aunt and cousin took it completely in stride, saying they've seen it for years.
My aunt previously had told me of seeing many different ghosts in her apartment, but I suspected hallucinations. No longer.

Was in bed one night and felt something walking across the bed. woke up and turned on the light. Nothing. Next night same story and when the light went on nothing could be seen. Next night dig out one of my maglite flashlight and put it in bed with me. Following it's usual pattern woke up and felt something walking across the bed. Hit the on button and saw our old Cairn terrier "Holly". This happened for a few nights and after that never again. Had holly for about 15 years, got her in NY and brought here down to Louisiana. Partially blind, had to give her insulin shots and she was getting old. We found her outside one day shivering and curled up in a ball.Called our two daughters to say their goodbyes. Vet said we'll have put her to sleep. Stayed till she was gone. Maybe she showed up as a last good bye. I mentioned it to our daughters who at first thought old dad
had gone off the deep end. Told them no, but maybe saying good bye for the last time. Who knows?. Frank

Have 2 good friends that grew up in Wilmington, N.C., were boy scouts in 60's when the Battleship North Carolina was brought up river and tied off. Their troop " volunteered" to work on the ship and got to spend the night. They happened to be in the area that the jap torpedo hit killing some of the crew. From what they heard and saw they both went up to main deck and Never went back below deck. One hatch would not stay open after being closed many times and the " noises" they heard would curl your hair. One owned a Major brand tire business in Wilmington, the other supervised a state printing office, OH both are very much gun guys, one has WWII Half Track and 57 mm anti tank gun( live).

Paranormal experiences are like the sense of smell-they're there, but nobody has found a truly objective way to measure and quantify them. In 1911 two Frenchwomen were strolling in the Gardens of Versailles. They saw a man in a green uniform with a tricorner hat, looked sort of out of place. They noticed his French was a little off. They continued their walk. When they mentioned this to someone, described the area they were told that section had been relandscaped years ago and today looked nothing like what they described, the soldier was wearing the uniform of Louis XIV's personal bodyguard, and their description was an accurate depiction of what it would have looked like in Louis' time.

For me, the nearest thing to a paranormal experience occurred a few days after Mom passed. Greif had hit me pretty hard. I was sitting in a chair in Mom and Dad's house and felt an enveloping comfort at my back and sides. Almost like being hugged but no sensation of touch. It felt like I was being informed that "it will be ok." From that point forward, things did indeed get better.

Paranormal? I can't say. Stages of grief? Likely. Regardless, I haven't forgotten the event of 23 years ago. If it was Mom giving me one last hug, I'm ok with that. While that event was pleasant, I'm thankfully not inundated with paranormal experiences.

Two family members have experienced sightings. My aunt, suffered paranoia and dementia in varying degrees throughout here life. Toward the end of her life she was quite vocal about the sightings in her apartment. Her son, now in his mid 80's is starting to see things. Real? Or the mind going astray?

I'm disinclined to scoff at paranormal events. As many posters have already said, there are things we cannot comprehend or explain. I'm ok with that. I'm a lifelong learner and anticipate more learning to come.

But I ask you: If there are perceivable spirits of the dead inhabiting our existence, why are we not bumping into them more frequently? After all, a lot of people died before we appeared.

Only one experience where I sensed rather than saw the presence of an entity. I mentioned it to the property owner who said "Oh, that's the ghost of the Indian who hangs around here."

Can't confirm or deny. Was impactful. I'm with those who say we can't and don't know everything about the place we inhabit.

I posted this earlier. It was about the old family house in West Virginia. People have experienced the sound of someone walking through the house while they are there alone and feeling the floor boards move as the steps cross the living room floor. In one of the bedrooms, people have felt someone come into the room and sit on the side of the bed or lie down next to them in the bed. These same people then experience difficulty breathing until they got up and left the room. One person saw an old women standing in the doorway of the same bedroom staring at her. I have experienced shadows moving about the living room at night. People, me included, have heard the jingling of small bells in the house. Once while there alone, I was awakened but a bang like the back door had been kicked open. I jumped out of bed and grabbed my revolver to confront whoever it was but nothing was disturbed and the back door as secure. Exactly two hours later I was lying there awake and the noise happened again. The house did not shake, it was just a very loud bang. I was leaving the house this past Monday and as I picked up the last thing from the living room and began to walk past the bedroom a groan/moan came from the bedroom. No one else was in the house. My son-in-law was coming to the house at the end of a hunting day and saw the blind in the upstairs window move like someone had looked out. He ran into the house and up the stairs but no one was there. This is just some of the experiences, not all of them. [UPDATE] This past June (2021) I had a priest come to the house for a cleansing. Although I have not been back since the cleansing, my son and son-in-law were there for this past deer season. They reported no incidents and the place feels better now.

This is one of my favorites that I grew up reading.

Albert and the 'Eadsman by Marriott Edgar;

On young Albert Ramsbottom's birthday
His parents asked what he'd like most;
He said to see t' Tower of London
And gaze upon Anne Boleyn's ghost.

They thowt this request were unusual
And at first to refuse were inclined,
'Til Pa said a trip t' metrollopse
Might broaden the little lad's mind.

They took charrybank up to London
And got there at quarter to fower,
Then seeing as pubs wasn't open
They went straight away to the tower.

They didn't think much to the buildin'
'T weren't what they'd been led to suppose,
And the 'Bad Word' Tower didn't impress them,
They said Blackpool had got one of those.

At last Albert found a Beefeater
And filled the old chap with alarm.
By asking for Ghost of Anne Boleyn
As carried her 'ead 'neath her arm.

Said Beefeater 'You ought to come Fridays
If it's ghost of Anne Boleyn you seek,
Her union now limits her output
And she only gets one walk a week.

'But,' he said, 'if it's ghosts that you're after,
There's Lady Jane Grey's to be seen,
She runs around chased by the 'Eadsman
At midnight on th' old Tower Green.'

They waited on t' green till near midnight,
Then thinking they'd time for a sup,
They took out what food they'd brought with them
And waited for t' ghost to turn up.

On the first stroke of twelve, up jumped Albert,
His mouth full of cold, dripping toast,
With his stick with the 'orses 'ead 'andle
He pointed, and said 'Here's the ghost!'

They felt their skins going all goosey
As Lady Jane's Spectre drew near
And Albert fair swallered his tonsils
When the 'Eadsman an' all did appear.

The 'Eadsman chased Jane round the grass patch
They saw his axe flash in the moon
And seeing as poor lass were 'eadless
They wondered what what next he would prune.

He suddenly caught sight of Albert
As midnight was on its last chime
As he lifted his axe, father murmered
'We'll get the insurance this time.'

At that, Mother rose, taking umbridge;
She said, 'Put that cleaver away.
You're not cutting our Albert's 'ead off,
Yon collar were clean on today.

The brave little lad stood undaunted
'Til the ghost were within half a pace.
Then taking the toast he were eating,
Slapped it, dripping side down, in his face.

'T were a proper set-back for the 'Eadsman
He let out one 'owl of despair,
Then taking his ladyfriend with him
He disappeared - just like that, there.

When Pa saw the way as they vanished
He trembled with fear and looked blue,
'Til Ma went and patted his shoulder
An' said, 'Sallright lad, we saw it too.'

Some say 'twere the drippin' as done it,
From a roast leg of mutton it came,
And as th' 'Eadsman had been a Beefeater
They reckon he vanished from shame.

And around Tower Green, from that moment,
They've ne're seen a sign of the ghost,
But when t' Beefeaters go on night duty,
They take slices of cold drippin' toast.

I think the house I grew up in was haunted.

During winter I'd toss my coat on the steps when I got home from school. Later I'd find it in the back yard.

I started putting it in the closet like my mom asked me to, and it never ended up in the back yard anymore.

Yep...those steps were haunted.

I think that a lot of them just move on. To where? Dunno.
When my Dad died, my Mother dreamt that he came to her and she freaked out. The next night he came to my sister in her dreams and she freaked out. Finally, the next night he came to me in my dreams and we sat on my bed and talked for a while.
After that the "visits" stopped.
Did he move on or was it all really just a dream?

Well, I believe that Rusty and Moosedog nailed it. The arrogance of man causes him to think he knows it all.

I find it all very interesting; ufos/aliens, paranormal activity/ghosts, reincarnation, spontaneous combustion, precognition, demonic possession, and what-all. I try to keep an open mind about it. On one hand it seems too fantastic to be remotely possible. And given the playful nature of man and the certainty of the fact that the mind can play tricks on you, I understand how/why many people dismiss it all out of hand. But, on the other hand, there are sooooo many well documented cases and so many witnessed by many people and so many reported by such people and Leos, Fire fighters, pilots and military leadership, and everyday, hard working, taxpaying, mentally stable people it is equally as plausible that at least one report is true and accurate. And if one IS true then there are certainly more that are true. Some are obviously hoaxes but maybe not all.

It can't be blamed on a location, time frame or culture. reports are global, dating back to earlier civilizations, and coming from all religions and ethnic groups.

SO. I just can't commit to either believing or not believing. They say seeing is believing but I gotta say, and I mean it, I want NEVER Ever to see or experience ANY of it. It would completely, instantly, and forever destroy my concept of this world and my orientation in it.

It's kind f fun to think about but that point right there is where the fun ends for me.

I often wonder if paranormal experiences are related to things we'd like to see. People mention seeing a departed loved one, family member, friend-pet.
