This summer has been uneventful with bears on my property .
I try to go to the transfer station 2 or 3 times a week.

But sightings are up in my small town in north west CT.
Last Thursday morning one got into the trash and I had garbage all over the yard. I cleaned up the mess and gave the trash barrels a good dose of bleach .

Normally the trash is kept next to my 3 bay garage about 75 ft. from the house. But for some reason yesterday I moved the two large recycle barrels up next to the house as they must be put out to the road every two weeks on Monday.

Last night at 12:45 am I went to the bathroom and suddenly I hear a crash about five ft. from the window. I looked out and did not see anything but the trash barrel tipped over and garbage all over the yard so this morning I cleaned up the mess again and will be going to the store for more bleach.

In the last few years I 've had several encounters with bears in the yard but thought this year I might be lucky and not be bothered . I guess I was wrong.

We have been getting a bear around here lately also. After making some huge messes I called the game commission. One of the things that they said to try was to put a bag of ammonia near the top of the garbage can. That will discourage the bear from looking in THAT can again.

We get our trash picked up every week. (Monday) Recycle on Thursday

We also have bears up here and of course Raccoons. Have to keep the cans in the under house garage till I take them down to the road in the morning. Some people put out their cans the night before, no bags allowed and its common to see a mess.

The town does not clean up, who put out the trash is responsible. Most times that is the flatlanders leaving their camps on Sunday afternoon and illegally putting out their trash too early:mad:

Having a three family I have two large barrels for bagged and a smaller barrel for loose trash/garbage.
There is no town pick up so I do go to the local transfer station several time's a week as I'm retired and don't mind .

I also have two large barrels for can's ,bottle's and cardboard that is picked up every two week's.
It use to be picked up on Monday or the next day on a holiday at 6:30 am now you never know what time they will come.:(

My cousins daughter lives on a farm not far from Fayetteville Arkansas. She has sent me several pictures of bears on their patio in broad daylight. She says that so far they haven't lost any cattle or house pets.
According to Wildlife Dept. info, the area around Fayetteville has the highest concentration of bears in Arkansas.

A few years ago my sister was loading trash in her Subaru from the family cabin which is next to the Arapahoe National forest at about 9,300 feet above sea level.

She came out of the cabin carrying another load of trash and discovered a black bear in the Subaru rooting among the trash already in the car.

She turned around quickly and re-entered the cabin. She watched the bear until it got tired of the trash and wandered into the forest.

The Subaru stank of bear for months!

Well my next door neighbor told me today that a large sow bear and two cub's were spotted in there yard yesterday afternoon.

Not sure if there the one's raiding my garbage but it's possible.;)

a couple of weeks age I spotted a sow and two cubs across the road at 10 in the morning. Two days later there was a larger black bear 12' from our family room picture window. The next night a bear got into our trash cans and made a mess; I was planning to go to the dump the very next day. OK enough of this! I rigged up a motion sensor and solid state relay to power an older harbor freight electric cement mixer with rocks inside. Two nights after that one of the trash cans was moved 2' but otherwise in tact and upright. Guess that noisy mixer did the trick and I doubt he will return.

We have bears in coast SC.....

...but you hardly ever see them in populated areas. I reckon soon we'll have coyotes and wild pigs in our trash.

Right now the raccoons and possums are kinda bad because their habitat is being taken away big time.

A baby raccoon approached our porch the other day to get some cat food. I didn't want to start bad habits, but I didn't have the heart to run it off.
