I'm heading out shortly for a trip over to The National Pistol Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio.

I'll do a little Walkabout there and look things over, it's supposed to be really nice today. Sunny 80/85, 5-10 mph breeze, that'll work for me.

I may even look to visit a winery along the lake later.

I have to get up there sometime. Please give us a full report!

My youngest son is there with the local Jr. Pistol Team.
It's the last year he can shoot as a junior so it's a bit of an emotional
trip. Already had an equipment issue but got it handled quickly.

He called me from the Cabela's store in Dundee on the way down. It's
become traditional to call and razz his old man because he's at
"The Mall For Guys" and I'm not.

He can't go next year due to other commitments. I hope it is a
great year for him, and the team.

It was just a beautiful day for a drive over to Camp Perry, as this is Pistol Week, traffic was light and that was nice. Sunny and 80 degrees, with a slight breeze is OK with me anytime.

I've never been to Camp Perry before so I toured around a little. I spent some time looking at the displays of Missiles, Helicopters, Tanks, Armored troop carrier, a couple of Very OLD Cannons. I drove down to have a look see at the Beach and the Pier. Some people were wading out in the water and kids were digging in the sand.

I took the time to THANK the Servicemen there for their SERVICE TO THE COUNTRY.

I went to the CMP Store as I obviously have never been there either, and lots of folks were buying rifles and parts. M1 Garands from generally around $1000 with some rough things were less, up to a rack of $3000 ones, WOW! Many of the older and different rifles were for ceremonial use only, possibly parts. I purchased a newly rebuilt Daisy AIR RIFLE for $100, looks like a project for me to refinish the stock, it doesn't look too bad as it is though.

Today a lot of Jr Clubs were shooting, good luck to them all.

Commercial Row has some Gunsmiths working and some Dealers like Fin/Feather/Fur, Champions Choice, and a large display of bullet traps of ALL sizes and costs. There were target displays (movable and multiple) Clark Jr was there, and he had a S&W 38 Special PPC type sights and barrel setup, it was $1305, I didn't pick it up from the stand though, things like that can have you reaching for the plastic real quick in a weak moment sometimes, sometimes Hell, too many times. He had a 1911 too and a Black Rifle setup.

T-Shirts, BUT NO JERKY, I LOOKED AND SAW NO JERKY THERE.

You can have some CUSTOM FIT EAR PLUGS made there, I already have a set from a doctor at our gun club.

Lots of reloading stuff, books, CD's, clothes, ground pads, scopes, ammo boxes, cleaning stuff, gloves, hats, shooting coats, are at the dealers displays.

Caspian, Springfield, Pardini, Hammerili, Larry's Guns with Match Dot and Ultra Dot redots. Primers, Powder, Bullets, Ammo, there is a bunch there for sure.

Eley Tenex 22LR was $19 a box of 50 at Fin/Feather/Fur and $1775 for a case of 5000 rounds, they must of had 25 or 30 cases of this 22LR ammo just sitting there along with the other Eley ammo. That 22LR ammo is far better than me at $1775 a 5000/case, that's for sure baby! They have lots of other 22 ammo CCI, Blazer, and Federal too. Mucho Centerfire and Military ammo are also in attendance.

Fin/Feather/Fur had 8 pound kegs of Bullseye for $94 plus Ohio Sales Tax, 4lb was $57.
WST 4lb $60, 8 lb was $110,
231 was 1lb $21, 8lbs $111,
2400 was 1lb $19, 4lb $61, 8lbs $107
WSF 1lb $19, 4lb $63, 8lbs $112.

West Cost Magnum Shot was $38 for 25lb bag, different sizes of shot.

Primers Winchester $29/1000, $138/5000 (this is Fin/Feather/Fur) this looked like the best I saw for prices.
Federal $28/1000, $140/5000
CCI $28/1000, $140/5000

I hope my rambling here is of some use to someone. All in All it was a nice day trip.

If you're close, you should check the 2012 Camp Perry National Match schedule on-line and maybe plan to visit a day or two this month. Ceder Point is very close and has some of the BEST ROLLER-COASTERS IN THE WORLD, IF YOU NEED TO GET YOUR HEART PUMPING. Lake Erie has Great Walleye and Perch fishing too.

Guns, Experts Shootin' em, Experts Talkin' em, Great Fishing, OH! I forgot, there are many Wineries to visit in that area also, the weather's Great, and it's FUN TIME in OHIO right now for all us gun folks.:):):)

Took a trip a few years ago. They had the M-1 carbine matches going on. I saw the museum and walked through the exhibitors building. Lots of stuff to see. Went in the CMP store, Lots of rifles, M-1 Garands, 22s, No carbines at that time. I bought an ammo can of 30-06 for around $55.00. It was a nice day trip. Well worth the drive. Also went to Cabelas.

Trooperdan,

Marvel Precision is there, Didn't they go their separate ways as companies?

I also thought Mr Marvel was ill.

I just checked, Mr Marvel's web site Bobmarvelscustomguns.com IS NOW UNAVAILABLE.

The NEW 22LR CONVERSION for 1911's that Bob Marvel developed is handled by

NIGHTHAWK CUSTOMS NOW and is $450 according to the web site.

Does anyone know the PRESENT condition of Pistolsmith Bob Marvel?

BOB MARVEL INFO.

A person in North Carolina said they just finished the end of June

a two weekend gunsmith course at community college taught by Bob Marvel

A lot of parts were Nighthawk, the frame and slide were somebody else.

on building your own 1911, ALA, the Cylinder and Slide 1911 build school.

BOB MARVEL "WHERE ARE YOU"?

Moonman, I was in that NC class as well. Bob was certainly fine then and had plans I believe to be at Perry. The slides and frames we used were made by PM Machine of Berryville Arkansas, stainless steel and very, very good quality.

Trooperdan,

Maybe he's at Camp Perry now, yesterday was the Juniors shooting.

Glad to hear Mr Marvel is OK.

You should do a post about the 1911 Build Class, or did you do one on another forum?

At least say what was what, and by the way, what does a class like that cost?

I suppose you are making your own 1911 to keep, right?

I've been keeping my eye on the NEWEST 1911 22LR Conversion by Bob Marvel.

The whole deal with the recall and all went on over two yaers and is now handled by Nighthawk.

The conversion is now NIGHTHAWK designed by Bob Marvel.

I'll keep my eye on it for a few more months to see how it works out.

Moonman, here is a link from a fellow student in the class to a thread on the 1911 forum: The last post has a link to the school listing, offered through Montgomery Community College, Troy NC. Bob will supply all small parts if you desire. All told, I have about $1200 in the pistol not counting tools I purchased.
