Value of 28-2 with options

How would a person value a model 28-2 that was presumably dolled up by a prior owner? Target trigger, target hammer, target grips, and red ramp front sight. It's my understanding that only the NYSP models would have had the red ramp front sight. I believe it dates to around 1979 to 1980. I have the box, but it doesn't reflect the target options on the box label.

It's a really cool gun. Do owner added options devalue the gun or add value?

Age old question,ultimately determined by the market( buyer/seller) also depends on what the upgrades are. If its something that buyer finds attractive to the eye& an enhancement to the firearm= value added or could be used as a negotiating point for price.( this is where the "haggle" comes in)

FWIW, To me........

Red ramp, + I got old eyes and it helps with a "flash" sight picture

Target hammer, neutral to a + shoot revolvers "mostly" double action

Target trigger, - on a "combat" 4" revolver it's not conducive to DA shooting

Target grips, - to my medium size hands

If it were mine, I'd most certainly value it at more than the price range of one in similar condition but not having the enhancements.

I agree with most above. I like the red ramp, target hammer and trigger and unlike many, factory targets fit my hand perfectly.

I think if one went to sell this, a TT, TH and TG always enhances the value of a S&W. Nothing done is irreversible. The parts alone would bring several hundred dollars on Ebay, should you decide to go as-issued and back to magnas and normal hammer and trigger..

I presume the finish is original and if true, it's in excellent condition. The replacement sight, hammer, trigger, and stocks reduce collector value, but make it more appealing to someone who wants an excellent condition shooter grade Model 28.

I think it's a great Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman! You basically have a poor man's blued 4" Model 27...except of course for the crosshatched top of the barrel rib and bright blue finish. To the HP purist, it might not be as valuable or collectable as an untouched HP, but I think it would appeal to many of us as an excellent shooter that we wouldn't mind taking to the range. Having the original box is also a plus. I believe that your enhanced 28-2 would be worth just slightly less than a comparable 27-2. Enjoy!

It amuses me to see people try to "upgrade" an M-28- an M-27 and a half ?instead of appreciating it for what it is. AFAIK the NYSP never issued the M-28, they ordered-then cancelled-the M-520, the one I have seen and the pictures I have seen of others did not have the red front ramp insert. AS noted, the hammer and trigger can be easily replaced, I note S&W grips do no fit me, my S&Ws wear Herrett's or Pachmayrs. Though your grips look very nice.

Those targets are beautiful. I myself am not a fan of the wide grooved triggers. The hammer spur don't add anything but looks. An well done red ramp is a good thing.

Offered a dead stock 28 and yours at the same price I would take yours unless the dead stock one was LNIB with everything and I wanted a collectors piece.

I like it with bells and whistles.
I’d pay $150 + over the plain, but.. I’d have to have a plain one too,
and if all I had were dolled up versions, and the plain version was more rare, I probably pay more for the plain if I didn’t have it.
Since yours is a little more rare, I would imagine it would appeal more to someone who already has the plane version who is a collector/accumulator.

My opinions may totally change on this as I am a newbie still in the honeymoon phase, and can only talk with authority about my own opinions!

Adding factory parts should enhance the gun’s value instead of diminishing the value. I have a 4” 28 with 3 T’s but no box - so no idea if factory shipped that way, returned for upgrades or if parts came off a blister pack display.

NYSP did indeed issue M28s. They were stamped NYSP on the left side of the frame and came with the red ramp front, white outline rear sight blade and the .312" smooth combat trigger. They are in the N546xxx serial number range, per the SCSW 4th edition.
