Vertical hand grip

Can I mount a vertical hand grip on the stock forearm grip of an M&P 15 Sport or will I have to change the forearm grip.
1. If I can mount a grip on the stock forearm any recommendations as to which vertical grip.
2. If not then which forearm and vertical grip would be recommended.
I am a newbie to the AR platform and and any and all help will be appreciated.

When I use a vert grip I use one like this (only shorter) that I got for $5 at a gun show:

ProMag AR-15 Vertical Foregrip Black Polymer "Swiss Pattern" PM007

Cheap, light, and gets the job done.

I'm not sure I would want to hang much off the stock Sport handguards. Tossing the stock handguards is one of the few changes I've made to my Sport. MOE handguards would probably be the cheapest, or you can look at a two piece drop-in replacement rail that will allow you to attach standard gear. I chose a Midwest Industries drop-in quad rail. Yankee Hill, Daniel Defense, and others also sell drop in rail handguard replacements.

You can mount a vertical grip to the standard hand guards, but you have to buy a rail that is made to attach to the hand guards through the vent holes.

I would probably go with a Magpul hand guard or a drop in rail that I could attach the grip directly to.

I don't want to hang a lot of gear off of it but I did notice that when I did a 20 round mag dump the forearm got a little warm and if I know Momma she's gonna wanna do some mag dumps.

The Sport hand guards do not have heat shields in them. You may just want to change out with a set of hand guards that do have a heat shield.

Mag dumps with a stock hand guard tend to get a little warm as they have no heat shields in them. Replacing them with something similar with an integrated heat shield, or any of the Magpul hand guards is a good way to go. With the Magpul products, they generally come with a few rail sections you can mount for your intended purpose. Also, with the Magpul hand guards, they make a vertical grip that will mount directly to the hand guard. Nice to have options.

I ordered an aluminum forearm last night that I found on amazon for $30.00 usd read about 50 reviews on it mostly from guys that put them on M&P 15 ARs they all had praise for it so I though I give it a try also ordered a Promag vertical grip a couple of spare firing pins and a few other goodies should get them in 4-5 days let you how they work out O ya almost forgot the forearm come with heat shields. if they work out I'll post the name of the place that I got them from if I can.

Magpul makes a seven slot plastic rail that can mount to the stock handguard that is pretty solid. After buying a quad rail I found it made the rifle nose heavy. The plastic rail was an after thought experiment I tried to lighten things up.

Beware the black rifle money pit.

I agree with Cyphertext. It's easier to just replace the handguard. The Magpul ones are good. Here's what it will look like. The picture is of my 15-Sport from years ago.

I will give you this one piece of advice. If you are even entertaining the idea of installing a free float handguard on your 15-Sport, skip the Magpul. Find a free float handguard that utilizes the stock barrel nut. Troy Alpha and the Sampson Evolution are examples. Either cut down your FSB or install a low-profile gas block. Voila.

As you can see, I started out with the Magpul handguards just so I could mount a vertical foregrip. I thought I could do without a free float. The problem is that the mod diesase got to me. I couldn't get the free float idea out of my head. I should have just put the $$$ to a free float from the start.

...of course now I think about it I should have just delayed gratification and just bought a rifle completely decked out from the get go... would have save me $$$ in the long run...

Pal you just don't know my Woman, after I got my Mini-14 cryo froze she ran 1200 rounds thro it and got pissed because I wouldn't let her shoot any more, she even had me teach her how to reload so she could reload her own 5.56 ammo buys her own components and is pretty good at it. wants a fully auto AR next Pal she's a trip.

Well I got the quad rail and mounted and didn't like the way it looked so I'm not going to use it it fit good but was just to bulky with the rail guards on it.

Got the the forearm grips with heat shields from BCU put them on with the vertical hand grip and really like it more impotent Momma likes them she's really happy with the set up. Thanks again for all the help

I am a little too late. The Magpul forearm with the Xtm hand stop work really well. A vertical grip should be used as a hand reference and not a full on grip. It is an Ar so, whatever works for you guys.
