Victory data base

Thanks. I have never seen precise information about at what SN the GHD moved from the butt to the topstrap, so that information helps move it back a little.

low serial # victory .38 special

from what i can tell my victory must be an early gun, serial # is V37169. all matching ##s, even inside right smooth grip panel. i would love to know the month and year of mfg. anyone out there who can help, i cannot find ANYTHING!! this pistol is the gray parkerized looking finish, with a very tight action and lockup, and a bright perfect bore/cylinders. trigger/hammer are a solid black finish, not the case hardened finish i see on most pics i look at. what do i have?? shoots like a dream, very smooth action.

I just picked up another Victory Model. SN 9488XX. NO prefix although there is a "WB" stamped on the other side of the lanyard ring. It has the usual markings, BNP with crown, G2B with crossed swords, G1 under the left grip, large "P" above the left grip. Most of its black finish is gone as are the original grips. Operation is smooth and tight. I estimate it was made sometime in 1942. Any information will be appreciated.

Victory Model I mentioned on this forum.

I attached the pictures of the victory models I asked about on this forum. The 1st and 2nd pictures show the current purchase I made. The nickel plated one I asked about earlier this year.

Your pictures show a well-worn pre-Victory .38/200 British Service Revolver (chambered in .38 S&W). SN 9488XX would indicate shipment from S&W in March or April 1942. At that time, the Lend-Lease Act of 1941 had taken effect, and there should be a "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" stamping on the topstrap. The grips are not original, and from a later period.

Thanks for the info. There is no US Property stamp on the tops trap. I read on your forum this may be a private consumer or Merchant Marine issue. I confirmed this is still a .38/200 cal. Never modified to .38 special. I also think this is one of the last Black Magic Oxide finished model before the military black finish (parkerized). The grips were from me. The guns came with ugly plastic yellow grips.

Can you help me identify the stamps on the butt? Next to an ordinance stamp there is an oval with a symbol inside, next to a "WB" and a small letter "P". Goes with pre-victory model serial number 9488XX.

That explains the lack of US Property stamp on topstrap. This gun was sold to the Canadian military. Looks like letter time!!!

Yep, definitely the Broad Arrow within C denoting Canadian property. WB is Waldemar Bromberg, a U. S. Ordnance officer responsible for administration of government contracts with S&W.

I just read on another website about the Defense Supply Corporation. These models did not have the US Property stamp on them.

Quote from C+ARSENAL

"Another player in the revolver market was the Defense Supply Corporation, which procured .38 caliber revolvers for non-military government agencies (police, defense plants, etc…). DSC contracted directly with S&W and then distributed accordingly. When production was taken over by the army, the DSC still behaved relatively independently, as the Army kept their acquisition requests separate. DSC revolvers usually do not display the “U.S. Property” mark, although due to some loans of equipment back and forth, anything might be found in small numbers."

Victory to add

New here, so I hope I'm in the right place. I have a 38S CTG marked US Property GHD left side of top strap, a "P" forward of hammer, top marked " Patented February 6,06, Sept 14,09, Dec 29,14. Serial number on bottom of grip V648023, inside the chamber is P V 648023, but inside yoke is a '4' and smaller below that is 3652. Images attached - any information appreciated as well as value if known. Thanks so much. I have additional images.

What you appear to have is the British service revolver version of the WWII Victory model, often called the .38/200 or the K-200. The "V" in the serial number stood for "Victory." These were supplied to the British Commonwealth military during the 1940-45 period. For British use, they were chambered for the caliber .38 S&W cartridge (which the British called the .380 Revolver MK2), and that's what the ".38 S&W CTG" stamped on the barrel means (CTG is an abbreviation of cartridge). It would have left the S&W factory in July or August 1944 according to the serial number. Ammunition for these is still made, but is a little difficult to find in many areas of the country. The numbers in the yoke are merely assembly numbers, no special meaning to them. The U.S. Property stamping indicates that they were supplied to the allies under the Lend-Lease Act of 1941, and technically remain U. S. property. Most Victories have the same or similar property stamping.
