I would like to see some pictures of the Virginia State Police Commemorative Model 66, and find out some information on this special run.

Thanks everyone!

I have had a couple of the model 66 VSP commerataives. Badge engraved on gun with special serial number and in wood display case. There was also a model 60 VSP that very few have heard of and I have only seen a few of them. And there were S&W VSP commerative buckles serialized to match the guns but the timing must have been off and few troopers actually got the buckles to match their guns. I have two of the buckles and could post a pic if interested.

Here are a couple pictures of the S&W VSP Buckles some of the guys were asking about.

I didn't know about the belt buckles.. they are very nice. Do you have any pics of the revolver?

I would also like to see some pictures of the Virginia. I have an Indiana State Police Model 66 and it has the shield on the right side and also in addition to the S & W number, has "ISP 191" on the left side below the cylinder on the frame. Do not recall now how many of the ISP units were made (I am thinking I read somewhere 500) but were in the mid 70's. The Virginia might be very similar. Sharp looking guns.

Virginia State Police Commemorative Model 66

This was a model 66-1. Besides factory serial number, they were also numbered and issued by seniority; thus, most senior got VSP#1, etc. I got mine in April 1982 - it is numbered VSP550.

Lt. could these revolvers only be purchased/issued through the VSP? Thanks.

Yes - these were only offered to active-duty/working members and retired VSP personnel at the time, as I recall. Active duty received numbered guns - not sure what retirees got on theirs (as to "VSP" numbers).

Bob, were the troopers carrying Model 66 revolvers at the time as their duty weapons also? Were the commemoratives carried by any troopers, or were they more a collectible to honor their service?

I have a Model 66-1 with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol emblem on the right side. These were issued guns during the late 70s into the early 80s, I believe. I think there also was at least one NCSHP Anniversary edition as well.

NC State Highway Patrol S&W Commemorative

You are correct that the NC State Highway Patrol had a commemorative at about this time.

NC Highway Patrol's 50th anniversary commemorative was a Model 29-2 in nickel. It was ordered/delivered in 1979. They also did a 75th anniversary, but it was a Beretta.

At the time the SHP got the Model 29-2's they were issued/carrying a four inch Model 19 in nickel (not sure of dash number) and a small number of Troopers were carrying Colt Border Patrol, also nickel, four inch guns. A small number of Model 36's with a square butt were issued to headquarters staff.

I believe these were the first Model 29's that S&W did as a commemorative. It was also the first gun that the badge and other printing was done by acid etching.

They came is these display cases.

The VSP Troopers did not carry the commemoratives - policy mandated only "issued" firearms carried on-duty, which were S&W mod. 64, 4" in 1982. You were permitted to put on oversize S&W target-grips, or grip adapters. Some troopers might have kept their Colt Official Police 4", but most of those were replaced w/mod. 64's. I think we paid well under $300. for the 50th Anniv. mod. 66. (I see the "NC" badge is much nicer done on their commem. than the VSP badge.)
